Langdon

we stand hand in heart on the roof
of the Langdon building in Madison;

a paved paradise stretches before us,
the animate grid of modern transportation
inching through the crowded city streets
in all their one-way
four-lane glory

we are seven stories tall
committing several deadly sins,
and before us seem the wonders
of this world;

you amaze me...

gentle and tender,
the night we shared will haunt my mind
forever:
a welcome ghost,
i now forgive you...
i need you to trespass against me
again

a thousand poems swim
like bluegill in your eyes;
i fish for survival
in the depths of your soul

i could fall in love
with this city in all her morning glory;
i could fall in love
with the man who stands beside me now,
softly stroking my palm with his fingertips

i could stay forever on this rooftop,
the warm breeze gently sifting through chestnut hair,

my heart held captive:
a willing prisoner still
in your distant hands
