mechanical murderer

she dances alone
in the dim light
of the Circle bar
on Route 16
near Cowden

escaping reality,
she gyrates in rocky rhythm
with the music
on the jukebox
and connects
with a man
across the room

an instant eye bonding
they stare,
gaze unbroken
by others

her eyes pull him in

and her fingers follow

she still feels alone
as his limp lips mingle with hers
but she feels her strength rising
through the weakness of the kiss
and she pushes away
out the door
into the night
past the cars
and gravel road

she sprawls over the railroad tracks
staring at the stars
feeling more isolated
than before
and when she feels the tracks trembling
she just cries
silently,
her thin body shivering
from the icy razorblade of night
and paralyzing fear of loneliness

she closes her eyes
through the squinted eyelids
she sees the light
of the B&F train
barreling down the tracks

an innocent conductor
a mechanical murderer
