~ Introducing Wildlife ~

It is said that there were deer on Random Island before it was permanently settled. We believe this is how Deer Harbour got its name.

Beavers were introduced to Random in the 1930's in an attempt to distribute the beaver population throughout the country. They were place in ponds at Deer Harbour, Hickman's Harbour and Lady Cove. However, the beaver population grew so fast that the government decided to capture beavers and move them to other parts of the Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Department of Wildlife brought a small herd of young caribou to Random Island in 1964.

In the 1930's rainbow trout were introduced into two ponds near Britannia Cove. They were also placed in the first pond at Deer Harbour, but not until the 1940's.
