James Black was born on August 31, 1975 in Ontario, Canada. He attended school in Burlington. James grew up listening to albums such as U2, INXS, Public Enemy, and Led Zeppelin. James, along with singer Scott Anderson, first started a band called Stone Soul Picnic. After joining with Scott's brother, Sean, Rick Jackett and then drummer Rob Gommerman they changed their name to The Rainbow Butt Monkeys and released Letters From Chutney. When they began work on there second CD they had noticeably changed their style, were dropped from Mercury records. Rob quit the band and was replaced by Rich Beddoe. They changed their name to Finger Eleven and recorded Tip. Probably the most noticeable change from Letters From Chutney to Tip is the guitar playing. The sound that James black has in his guitar playing easily makes him one of the most unique guitar players around.
