    Economic Profile

    Culture

The Morac-Songhrati-Meads population is composed of descendants of European and South-east Asian settlers. There is no evidence to suggest that the archipelago ever supported an indigenous population.
Although early Songhrato liked to refer to our nation as "A Small Piece of Europe in the tropics", modern Songhrato realise that our archipelago is planted firmly in Asia and, in the years preceding the invasion, began to cultivate ties with its Asian neighbours.
The diverse cultural mix of the island led to a vibrant community and small cultural enclaves dotted the nation, including the Chinatown area of Southwark and the Malay Kampung that existed on the outskirts of Streatley. This led to a fascinating mix of architectural styles throughout the Republic.

Morac-Songhrati-Meads has no official state religion, although the religion of the Meads Dynasty was Anglican and the influx of Malays and Filipinos throughout the early part of this century led to a growth in the popularity of Islam and Catholicism. There was also a sizeable proportion of citizens who listed themselves at the last official national census (in 1971) as "no religion".

Prior to the invasion, English was the official language of the Republic (and of the Kingdom of Humanity) while Malay was also spoken quite widely. The nation's unique patois Morac, has evolved over the years to incorporate words and meanings from English, French, Malay, Tagalog, Cantonese and even Gaelic.
Morac has intrigued the minds of many linguists and there was a joint venture between the Universities of Southwark and Adelaide to collate the first Morac dictionary. Sadly, much of this information was lost during the invasion.

    Events

The Songhrati Summer Festival, held in Southwark in late July, is the archipelago's Carnival. The week-long event includes barrel racing, a cricket tournament, a gamelan festival, the Southwark Marathon and feasts featuring the local succulent seafood and the famous Songhrati Ale.
