September 24, 2000, Event Details
The
event offers all ages a chance for participation as well as education.
Winners in all age divisions were honored with a trophy to mark the
achievement. Following the road race, in September 2000, Lil' Iguana
took the stage to perform skits centered around child safety and conducted
a questions and answer session that measured the children's awareness
of safety. Lil' Iguana makes appearances at civic events, schools and
fairs around New England, teaching about childhood safety issues and
promoting the message that "A safe and happy childhood lasts a lifetime."
Lil' Iguana was created in 1997 following the murder of Jeffrey. The
Curley family members and some politicians joined the committee as funds
are raised to benefit child safety programs throughout the state of
Massachusetts. Jeff's father and committee founder, Bob Curley, ran
in the year 2000 race as #1. The political field was led by Massachusetts
Governor Cellucci who also ran the race. Joining the Governor were Cambridge
Mayor Anthony Galluccio, Representative & Cambridge City Councilor Tim
Toomey, and Representative Jarrett Barrios. "This road race is my way
of turning Jeff's tragedy into a positive thing," said Bob Curley. "It
is important for parents and children today to learn the defenses to
help prevent this tragedy that happens to over 50 children a year in
the U.S. from happening again." Sponsors of Jeff's Run 2000 included
The Cambridge Side Galleria and Necco.
