Written By Webster Riddick

It was a cold and blistering day in Scranton, Pa. but it was red hot in the boxing ring at the sold-out Scranton Cultural Center. Jacqueline Frazier-Lyde made her professional boxing debut with her father Smokin Joe Frazier, brother Marvis Frazier, husband Peter Lyde and son John Joseph by her side. Dressed in a flashy black leather outfit with the Frazier named in silver on the back, Frazier-Lyde was dressed to kill and that’s exactly what she did when the bell rang.

Frazier-Lyde (1-0) looked like a raging bull when she charged after Teela Reese (0-2). Who needs a jab when you possess the power in either hand to knock-out your opponent. The startled Reese, was clearly intimidated and definitely out-classed by Frazier-Lyde. Frazier-Lyde threw some wicked body shots and although she looked quite wild, her intentions were very evident, to get the job done and to knock her opponent out.

Reese was backpedaling throughout the fight and after about five hard punches to the head which drove her into the corner the referee Gary Rosatto, called a stop to the bout at the 1:23 mark in the first round. Some of the 3,500 people in the audience thought that the stoppage was a bit premature and let the referee know about it.

" I didn’t get the chance to show what I can really do in the ring. I was planning on going to the body and we got kind of tied up. She was dipping so low and I couldn’t get any leveraged on my punches. But she wasn’t ready to fight me." Said a confident Frazier-Lyde.

Frazier-Lyde unleashes a vicious combination to the head and body!.
It was a long day of boxing with 11 fights total. In the main event ( IBC light heavyweight championship), Scranton’s Light-heavyweight Chris Mills (18-1, 15 KOs) was knockout by a late replacement fighter by the named of Robert Koon (21-8-1, 7 KOs), of Wilmer, Ala. Mills was knocked down twice in the fifth round and was stopped later in the round. It was Mills, first pro loss in 18 wins. For Koon, it was years and years of hard work that finally paid off for him.

" This was worth ten years of busting my butt in the gym, ever since I was a thirteen year old kid, I have been praying for this night. I was up against an undefeated fighter in Mills. I just kept my faith in the lord and I prayed to God everyday for him to pull me through. I knew Mills was wearing down and when he dropped his hands, bang! I came over the top and bingo, it was all over." Said a elated Koon.

Philadelphia’s own Curtis "All Bizness" Barker (14-0-2) won the vacant Pennsylvania state welterweight title in style by putting to sleep Reading’s Mike Rios in the fourth round. Old veteran Glenwood "The Beast" Brown ( 48-11, 29 KOs) slugged it out with Bernice Barber ( 17-16-2, 10 KOs ) and won a unanimous, eight-round decision.

In attendance was former heavyweight champion of the world Larry Holmes. International Boxing Federation middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins. The dapper Ivan Robinson, who is one of the best lightweight fighters in the world ( He will be fighting on the undercard of the Lennox Lewis vs Michael Grant at Madison Square Garden in April ). They all came to see the pro debut of Joe Frazier’s daughter, Jacqueline Frazier-Lyde, otherwise known as ‘Sister Smoke’.

Not too much was mention of Frazier-Lyde opponent, Teela Reese a single mother of a 3-year old son. Reese ( aged 19 ) was born in Alaska and lives in Lorraine, Ohio. She stands 5-foot-10 and weighs around 187 pounds. This was her second fight and she received $800 for her efforts. Before the fight she was very up beat and confident.

" I like to fight and beat people up. My favorite punch is the jab, but my biggest asset is my temper. I have a very short temper. One time a girl looked at me the wrong way and I put her in the hospital. Jackie Frazier is just like any other fighter. I going to go in there and do what I have to do." Said Reese.

Team Frazier: includes Sam Hickman, Marvis Frazier, Val Colbert, husband Peter Lyde and daughter Sable.
To say that Frazier-Lyde is like any other fighter was one of two mistakes that Reese made. The first is that she signed the contract for the fight and the second is that she actually stepped into the ring. When you fight a Frazier in the boxing ring, you better check your life insurance and your health care benefits.

When the fight was over and the victorious Frazier-Lyde greeted her many fans, there were more fireworks upstairs in the post fight press room. It was standing room only, as Frazier-Lyde and Team Frazier talked to reporters. Picking up from where she left off in the ring, Frazier-Lyde had enough energy to lashed out at Muhammad Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali.

" I going to kick your butt, Laila Ali. I’m challenging you and I want the answer now! Don’t make me come and get you! There is no excuses, the people want to see me kick your butt, Laila. That’s what Fraziers do, we kick Ali butt. I am ready, yea baby!" Said a excited Frazier-Lyde.

In the middle of the prep rally press conferences, Frazier-Lyde spotted Khalilah Ali, the half sister of Laila. And asked her to call her sister and tell her that ‘she wants her badly in the ring.’ To that Khalilah replied " I will make that call for you, but you better be ready to fight."

Frazier-Lyde talks to reporters after the fight and issues a challege to Laila Ali.
Frazier-Lyde started to throw punches at the television cameras and shouted " Laila, I’m going to kick your butt, baby. It’s ok, don’t be scared. Your daddy ( Muhammad Ali ) was scared when my father beat him. But he got over it. Let’s get it on! Let’s get down to fighting!"

The center stage is being set for a future showdown between the daughters of two great boxing legends. It has all the drama for a sensational fight, bad blood, revenge and respect. So get ready to dig deep into your pockets, to witness a Frazier vs Ali part 4 pay per view fight. And by the looks of things, it will be money well spent.
