Black Belt Magazine – School Of the Month Article – March – 1995. By Sandra Kessler "Colorful saris, sacred cows and the smell of curry invade this diverse and lively land ,which among other historical claims ,was the birth place of Bodhidharma, the Indian Monk who would eventually journey north to live at the legendary Shaolin Temple in China’s Henan province.many people believed that modern martial arts stemmed from the exercises he taught the shaolin monks primarily to ease the monotony of their daily meditation sessions. Meditation still plays a large part in the martial arts in the Far East.At Daniel Isaac’s Indian Ninjutsu Dojo in Devlali ,Nasik, where the art of Chhaya Sainik is taught ,classes begin with meditation. Created in 1973 by Solomon Isaac, Daniel ‘s father ,chhaya sainik (meaning “shadow soldier”) evolved from kalari payit, the ancient martial art of southern India.Isaac’s students are taught locks and holds which resemble jujutsu and aikido techniques, and they also participate in sparring or muqabla thyyari.Sparring sessions ,which are held in sandy pits ,are further unique in that the only prohibitions are eye gouges or grappling for than 30 seconds.Students interested in competition benefit from cross training in karate, taekwondo ,judo and kickboxing at the school. Because most people are unfamiliar with chhaya sainik, Isaac initially had trouble attracting students.Soon ,however enthuastic exponents were traveling by bicycle or motorcycle to the rural dojo(school) located about four hours from Bombay in the grape producing region of west India “I found out that most students were disinterested when they heard that we were chhaya sainik “, Isaac recalls.” But after we organized a grand display of the art ,and showed people what this art actually was ,the number of students shot up.” Classes are approximately two hours long and are held Mondays,Fridays and Saturdays.Special meditation sessions ,called kirisuto mukuso are held every Wednesday and Sunday. The students ages 10 to 25 ,begin class with meditation, followed by a warm-up session that includes stretching and strengthing exercises.Material from the previous training session is then reviewed ,after which combinations and forms routines are practiced.Kicking drills are performed using focus pads and after students are thoroughly warmed up, they conduct weapons training and rope –wall climbing.Classes conclude with taekwondo drills and sparring ,followed by breathing and relaxation exercises.Isaac believes the main reason students take to martial arts lessons is to overcome their fears ,which he says can be accomplished through meditation and sparring,. |

“ At first ,the student may only be defensive and may still fear.”Isaac says.”However , this is soon overcome and I proudly say that most students in my dojo who had fear when they joined ,have become victors over it. Chhaya Sainik has a philosophy based on the bible and life of the “Shadow soldier” is modeled after that of a shaolin monk Before they can join Isaac’s school ,students are questioned to determine if they have the right motivation to learn chhaya sainik .Isaac insists his students demonstrate proper restraint and humility at all times. It’s a respectful attitude Isaac himself developed long ago. “ One day I had just stepped down from from a bus when four boys surrounded me and started to get tough ,” Isaac relates . “ They wanted to pick a fight because they had heard that I was a karate instructor.Seeing that they could not aggravate me ,they spat at my feet and walked away, telling me that they would catch me the next time I passed the bus stop.I initially felt I should have taken on their challenge, but one week later ,the same boys signed up for my class and asked me to forgive them .I believe that a soft turns away wrath, and this is what I teach my students.
