Basic Banners or Flags

Decide as a family what pictures or words you want to use on your banner or flag.

•Look for patterns in coloring books, applique books and quilting books. Or go on-line and search coloring pages and applique sites.

•Trace your chosen pictures and words onto tracing paper and cut out.

•Arrange your cut outs until you are satisfied with the results. Measure the width and length of the background (space taken up by the cutouts plus 2 1/2" area beyond the design).

•Purchase broadcloth for the background, felt for the appliques, matching thread, fusible web, matching fabric tape if creating a flag, buttons and other decorations.

•Cut the broadcloth to the size you measured above. Make a rolled hem on all sides of the broadcloth.

•Use your tissue paper patterns to cut out the shapes from the felt. Decorate the shapes as desired.

•Use your tissue paper patterns to cut out the shapes from the fusible web. Remove the paper from one side of the web and fuse to the back of your felt cut out. Follow instructions that come with your web.

•Arrange your felt pieces on the broadcloth. Mark the outside edge of the felt pieces with chalk. Remove the felt pieces.

•Remove the paper backing from the fusible web on one of your felt pieces. Position felt cut out on the banner and fuse as above. Work from the bottom layers to the top. Fuse one felt cut-out at a time.

•Zigzag around the edge of your felt pieces to secure.

•If you are making a flag, cut 3 10" pieces of fabric tape. Sew the pieces at the top, middle and bottom of one short side of the broadcloth. These will be used to tie the flag to the flagpole.
