Tips for Wrapping A Very Large Gift (and Still Keeping the Item a Surprise)

by Abigail Beal

I once wrapped a rocking chair for a baby shower. I’ll admit this wasn’t my idea. We were having a baby shower for my boss and everyone knew I loved to gift wrap and thought I was pretty good at it. I will admit to you I took one took at that rocking chair and sucked in my breath. At least I had a lot of paper for this project.

That’s actually the first step: make sure you have enough supplies. Have enough gift wrapping paper and tape and whatever else you would like to use. Just to be safe, get more than you think you are going to need.

If the item is very large and you don’t want to use gift wrapping paper you could also try using a plastic tablecloth or even a brand new patterned sheet.

With a large item sometimes it is too large for you to pick up and hold the box to wrap it. Instead simply fold down the edges of the wrapping paper and create panels to wrap the sides of the box with.

If the item is not in a box it may be a little trickier to do. First cover the item with one sheet of wrapping paper. How much area did that cover? Your next step will be to tape gift wrapping paper to that piece of gift wrapping paper until it the item is covered. Be sure to keep gift wrapping paper loose and do not press it too hard against the gift – if it is not in a box. This will keep the gift wrapping paper looking neat and very attractive.

To top your item off it would be nice to add a bow. Your local crafts stores often carry very wide ribbon. Purchase a wide ribbon and make a bow and attach to the box.

Another nice touch to consider would be to tie some helium balloons to the back of the gift. Often you can get helium balloons that say a special message such as Happy Birthday or Happy Mother’s Day. The balloons could serve as a very large card and you could give the recipient a smaller card with the gift later on.

Remember, have no fear; wrapping a large gift is possible. And you can still keep the item a surprise. My boss had no idea we were giving her a rocking chair. It was a great surprise party and a great day.
