PLOT
The movie begins with Donnie asleep in the middle of a road. He wakes up, pretends as if nothing has happened and drives off with his bike. Later on at school, there's a new girl, Gretchen, there. After helping her out after she's accosted by creeps, Donnie asks her if she wants to go with him. She says sure and tells him that she and her mother are running from her father.
During the night, Donnie is awakened by Frank. Donnie wanders outside to meet Frank and is told by him that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. While Donnie is out, a jet engine falls on where his room is.
The course of the time left continues with Donnie committing various acts of vandalism. First, he takes an axe and hacks up the main water system in the school. He writes They Made Me Do It on the sidewalk in front. Later, in his phys ed. class, he does not comply with Kitty and makes a point about Jim's theory that life is seperated into 2 sections: love and fear. Jim comes to do a sermon type evangilistic lecture at Donnie's school. Donnie directly challenges him, calling him an anti-christ.
While Donnie is sitting, watching TV, he sees orbs coming out of people. He sees one coming out of himself and follows it to find a gun. He tries to find out more about this and reads a book by Roberta Sparrow, someone who seemingly has the same problem he does. He finds out later that she is Grandma Death, an eccentric old woman who wanders around. He is later at the movies with Gretchen, when she falls asleep. Frank appears and takes off his bunny hat to reveal that he's a normal guy, but is shot in the eye. He tells Donnie to burn down Jim's house. Donnie goes and does it, returning just in time as his girlfriend wakes up. When investigating the arson, police find that Jim was running a child pornography publishing ring. He is put in jail.
Kitty thinks that all the allegations against Jim are false, and convinces Donnie's mom to take over her dance group, Sparkle-Motion in going someplace. She reluctantly agrees, leaving Donnie and his sister, Elizabeth home alone. They decide to throw a Halloween party. Gretchen shows up, all teary eyed because her mother has been kidnapped by her father. After a little nookie, Donnie takes her for a drive. They're driving along when they stop at Grandma Death's house. It's empty inside, but then they get ambushed by bullies. Gretchen gets tossed onto the road, where a car runs her over. Getting out of the car is Frank, who is dressed up as a demonic bunny for Halloween. After taking off his bunny hat, Donnie shots him in the eye. Her then takes a dead Gretchen up to the mountains and waits for the world to end. The shot goes to Donnie's mom who is sitting in a plane. When the world ends, something happens to the plane.
The movie goes back in time to the beginning when Donnie first found out when the world will end. He laughs to himself and instead of leaving the house, he goes back to bed and the jet engine crushes his room.
