Georgina Hale is one of the most accomplished actresses who appeared in T-Bag. Born in Essex in 1943 Georgina Hale started her acting career at the age of 26 in the TV series Budgie.
Georgina Hale is also hugely successful stage actress having appeared in numerous films including many films of Ken Russell (Mahler and The Devils and in-joke cameos in Lisztomania and Valentino). With those and her performance in the Twiggy musical The Boyfriend (along with Glenda Jackson who appeared alongside Georgina again in T-Bag’s Christmas Ding-Dong) her acting talent was proved to be of the highest calibre.
After Georgina won the BAFTA for Outstanding new Actress for her role as Alma Mahler in the film named after her (and her husbands') character, Mahler (1974), her subsequent roles were unfortunately in poor quality films. Georgina made up for these roles with stunning performances in films such as Butley (1976) and many of Simon Gray’s stage plays which were filmed and shown on TV such as Only Make Believe, Electra, Plaintiff’s And Defendants, Two Sundays and The Seagull.
As well as the many film and stage roles Georgina has made many guest roles in many famous TV series such as her cult eccentric roles including her marvellous performance of Tabatha Bag along as her other roles including Daisy K in Doctor Who in 1988 (See image left).
Other TV acting work includes One Foot In The Grave, Upstairs Downstairs, Murder Most Horrid and The Lady Killers.
Georgina’s performance of Tabatha Bag is described by one of the writers of T-Bag, Grant Cathro, as a cross between Harpo Marx and a Dalek which I think is a great description of her. She has a unique way of portraying her characters and her Tabatha Bag is a great example of this - a cult character full of unpredictability and a flare for the delivery of funny lines, her unique voice, talent and body movement add to her eccentricity.
Since appearing in T-Bag Georgina has been in many films such as Preaching To The Perverted and TV programmes such as Casualty and recently (December 2002) The Bill (ITV) as Marilyn Costello and her performance as this ‘baddy’ resembles Tabatha Bag’s evil intent perfectly. It was great to see Georgina back on TV as there seems to be a lack of real talent appearing on TV these days. I hope she will continue to entertain us all for a long time to come.
Georgina Hale has had many theatre roles since T-Bag many of them for the Glasgow Citizens Company such as Mourning Becomes Electra (1991); The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore (1994); Britannicus (2002) and The Cherry Orchard (2002). Other plays include Life Support (1997, Aldwych, London); The Guardsman (2000, On Tour) and Semi-Monde (2001, Lyric Theatre, London).
A guarantee with Georgina Hale is no matter what character she plays she plays it in her unique style and flare. I can not think of any actress who could have bettered Georgina’s performance of Tabatha Bag, what a great choice of actress made by the casting department. Georgina was a great choice for the successor of Elizabeth Estensen’s Tallulah Bag and anyone who tries to say Elizabeth Estensen’s Tallulah Bag was better is wrong, even though the viewing figures declined, Tabatha Bag made me laugh the most. Don't forget to Vote For Your Favourite T-Bag. Georgina’s many performances on stage and screen since 1970 to the present day have contributed to her growing reputation as the UK’s best cult actress!
Georgina Hale celebrated her 60th Birthday on the 4th August 2003. Her birthday was in the Daily Mirror newspaper in the Happy Birthday section (see image scan right).
