General Remarks
Adopted from the Album of Tajik Costumes by Gremyachinskaya, et al., 1969.
Women's jewelry consists of diverse head and forehead pieces, ear-rings, temple pendants, and short and long necklaces. Women also use a variety of rings, bracelets, plait pendants as well as a whole array of other pendants for the bosom and the shoulders. The jewlery is chiefly made of silver with a carved or repousse ornament, often with niello or enamel. Often there are instances of coral, mother of pearl, glass and mastic beads but rarely of semi-precious stones like turquoise, carnelian, and small pearls. Even more rare are instances of gold, large pearls, and precious stones.
Jewelry is made by local and visiting jewelers to suit the vogue, tastes and means of customers. Imported jewelry is seldom worn.
