This red 1970 Chevelle SS454 was a ground up rebuild with everything from new sheetmetal, Glass, interior including new tach dash and wiring to a 10.5:1 454 bored .060 over with 510 lift 234 duration full roller assembly New TCI turbo 350 and 12 bolt with 4.10 gears. Chrome is all new as is the paint with the correct cranberry red. Weld drag lites and VDO Extreme Tach and ladder bars are the only things really out of place on the car to be correct looking. The car is not a matching numbers car. |
motor the car can turn 12.70 at 106 mph. A very mild cam, headers, 10" converter and 4:11 gears are the only changes besides wheels and slicks. The cast iron intake and rochester quadrajet are still getting the job done. 0-60 is about 4 seconds flat.......Still breakerpoint ignition too!!! 396 motors are not too bad now after-all are they ?? |
454 displacing 496ci with Merlin Heads, small solid roller, 9.8:1 comp, single plane intake, 850 Holley, 600hp @ 6100rpm. Car weighs 4140lbs. with me in it, has full interior, real cowl hood, 4.56 gears and in this picture still had my 4spd M-20 in it. Car ran 11.97 @ 117.3mph. Since I have swapped to a TH-400 w/brake, 4000stall GER converter, lighter Weld Wheels, and fiber glass seats, car now runs 11.74 @118mph. |
The bulky, muscular body of this gold 1970 Chevelle SS and the thick racing stripe on it make no attempt to hide the car's power. Though of dubious functionality, the cowl induction, a small louver on the hood that swivels open to feed cold air into the engine, also helps to give the 454 the lookof a performance |
demon. But the SS454's powerful looks only hint at the potency under the hood. The Chevelle's 454-cu-in. big block engine pumps out a formidable 450hp for the LS6 edition, the highest of any American production car in 1970. It could race from zero to sixy mph in a mere 5.4 seconds and reach 114 mph in 13.81 seconds in the standing 1/4 mile. |
