Rolland Madore is born on a farm in St-Rose de Lima, Templeton, Quebec.
I visited there with dad in the mid 1990’s.
The people living there let us in to visit after I told her that dad
had been born here over 60 years ago.
I stayed at the door and looked around but dad had a quick peek all
around the main floor. He
remembered there used to be two staircases to go upstairs.
One to the parents room and one to a large room for the kids! After all, they had 11 kids. Dad found it to be much smaller
then he remembered. He wondered how they did it in such a small house with 11
kids.
1926 Jun 26
Marguerite Presse is born in Cap de la Madeleine, Quebec.
1933
Rolland moves to the town of Ste-Rose de Lima on Blvd St-Rene.
House is still there. He
was 9 years old. They stayed here
about 3 years. Cleophas worked in
a blackboard mine.
1935
Rolland moves to Granada, Que. He is 12 yrs old.
He recalls in the summer his father & brother Maurice went to
Granada to build their house on the hill.
Quite a few people had gone to Granada to build themselves a home.
Dad thinks that maybe everyone got together and helped one guy build
his house then went on to the next guy's land and helped him build his and so
on until they were all built.
They did not finish the insides.
On Dec 19 1935 they all left Ste-Rose de Lima by train and arrived
Granada on Dec 25. The house was
finished on the outside but not on the inside.
It was winter and dad remembers seeing the nails popping through the
wall on the inside with frost on them.
The nails were about half inch thick with frost.
But he doesn't remember ever being cold.
It was heated with a wood stove.
Here Cleophas worked on constructing
roads in the Granada area during the summers.
He made $2.50 per day and had his own team of horses.

moi pas que tu lis sa'. Il disait
'un jour il vont aller a la lune'.
Grand maman croyait pas sa.
Grand papa disait 'nous on voira pas ca mais les enfants vont le voir'.
C'etait en 1938. Ils sont

Rolland Madore & Marguerite Presse are married in Beaudry, Que.
Rolland rents an apartment in Rouyn about 2 weeks prior to wedding.
They did not go on a honeymoon.
On the wedding day there was a big diner at Emile Presse's place and a
big supper at Cleophas Madore's place.
The evening saw a big party at Cleophas's house.
Dad hadn't invited any of his friends.
Mom had friends present. The newlyweds slept at John Pepin's (Conrad's
dad but not related yet) house across from Cleophas's place since Cleophas's
place was under renovations and some walls were not up yet. The day after the wedding there was a big party at Emile
Presse's residence and a regular supper.

.90 an hour plus almost the same in bonus. They lived in Malartic a little less then 3 years.

Raymond Presse was going to Asbestos to look for work.
Heard the money was good there.
He asked dad to go with him.
Mom said yes so he went.
She regrets having made that
decision. She was pregnant for
Leo. Dad got hired by Patrick Harrison.
He remembers walking down the street
and being stared at really bad.
He thought
'le monde est bien sauvage ici."
The next day, he went
to work and asked one guy what was wrong with the people around there.
He was told there had been
a 6 month strike that had just ended.
The strike had gone bad. A
police car had been burned and others had been turned over. The police had
declared marshal law and came into town at 5:00 am and were picking up
everyone they saw for questioning.
They wanted to know who had done this to the police cars.
People were hiding everywhere even under steps and balconies.
There had been workers hired to fill in these strikers jobs.
They were known as scabs.
They were hated. Anyone that was knew in town was looked at as possibly being
a scab. This is where dad met
Girard Gervais, his old time friend.
He told dad all about the strike.
When the strike was over, the new agreement gave the men $ .05 an hour
less then they had before. No
wonder the town was so angry.
Dad was now making $2.00 an hour plus
about the same in bonus. That was about $160.00 every two weeks plus bonuses.
They were ranked the 3rd top wage earners.
The first month they
arrived, they took an apartment on rue Noel in Asbestos. They lived here one
year.
Leo
was born here. Then dad went to work for the Canadian Johns Mainville Co.
