Mr. Weber's Classroom 201

When the nights are below freezing and the days are above, sap in maple trees begins to move up through the sapwood. In a process, not fully understood, carbon dioxide from cellular respiration drives the sap.In our area of western Pennsylvania this occurs usually between mid February to mid March.So around this time , biology students from room 201 at Langley High board a bus and head to Lutherlyn's Environmental Education Program near Prospect, Pa.There they tap, gather and watch the sap boil before enjoying a pancake and sausage brunch with real maple syrup.They also investigate tree structure and identification and tour the nature center.Here are pictures of the day.
