Most Influential Songs, 2002

I tried desperately to make this list under fifty, but it just didn’t happen. (Trust me, it started at 80-something.) This year was probably the hardest year to narrow down songs, probably because each third of the year has seemed like a whole other world, honestly. Some new developments this year were old songs reemerging: songs that were released decades ago, songs that I had put on the list in the past two years, or songs that probably should have been on the list before now. In addition, there is no Dave Matthews Band on the list, which some people (particularly at U of C) will be happy to know. This year’s new feature is the date I put the lyric on my page, plus the comment concerning its significance. Anyway, here goes nothing.
52. DJ Tiesto, live at Innercity Amsterdam: literally got me through those rough nights when work was never going to end. Eliot introduced me to him. 51. “Down with the Sickness,” by Disturbed (April 30, 2002): Andrew likes trying to make the noise. I listened to this song a lot at college, thanks to Chris.

50. “A Whisper” by Coldplay (early September): probably one of my favorite songs on the CD, a very captivating song. I listened to it many many times before going to college. 49. "Hate to Say I Told You So" by the Hives (July 12, 2002): drives to and from NIH with Michael.

48. “Amber” by 311 (week of June 22): Vicki and the summer, walking to the Hill with it stuck in our heads…

47. "Love Song for No One" by John Mayer (July 17, 2002): Vicki proclaimed at the John Mayer concert that this was her song. Who knows, but it’s still lovely.

46. “And So It Goes,” by Billy Joel (April 30, 2002): One of the songs Shades of Harmony used to sing back at NCS. Such a sad song.

45. “Innocent” by Our Lady Peace: Probably the most recent addition to this list, thanks to David and trading music.

44. "Thoughtless" by Korn (July 25, 2002): It’s got a good beat, what can I say?

43. “What Do You Need?” by Goo Goo Dolls (June 16, 2002): Peter.

43. “Green Eyes” by Coldplay (early September): for Andrew.

41. “Peanut Butter Jelly” by the Buckwheat Boys (November 8, 2002): for Maren and all the crazy de-stressing moments in our room.

40. “American Girls” by Counting Crows (late August): for Vicki and drives to and from Rehoboth.

39. "The Scientist" by Coldplay (September 3, 2002): another lovely song on the Coldplay CD.

38. “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds (December 2, 2002): for Yitz, introduced to me by David.

37. "Mourning" by Tantric (January 17, 2002): Although they may be some hard memories, it’s a really good song, despite the loud guitar chords at the beginning. For Jessie.

36. “Walking Away,” by Craig David (May 18, 2002): When everything else seemed to be going to hell…

35. “All You Wanted” by Michelle Branch (March 19, 2002): “Discovered” this song in Rehoboth with Vicki. Makes me think of Peter.

34. “I’m a Believer” by the Monkees (November 3, 2002): for Yitz, think: Rhythm and Jews.

33. “There by the Grace of God” by Manic Street Preachers (November 3, 2002): for John and introducing me to Manic Street Preachers, his obsession

32. “Soul to Squeeze” by Red Hot Chili Peppers (June 30, 2002): for Eliot and Vicki, who kept pointing out the song.

31. “You Can't Hurry Love” by The Supremes (June 23, 2002): So true.

30. “Whenever, Wherever” by Shakira (February 2, 2002): for Katty and Vicki and long (fast) drives, probably to and from Dupont. Lucky your breasts aren't like mountains...

29. “Honestly” by Zwan (November 24, 2002): To Jacob and the reemergence of Smashing Pumpkins in my CD player

28. “The Hollow” by A Perfect Circle (March 12, 2002): Watch out for lust, especially in the spring.

27. “Here is Gone,” by Goo Goo Dolls (April 12, 2002): Sure, it’s overplayed, but it still hits a chord. Drives with Jessie, in particular

26. “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John (June 2, 2002): Almost Famous and Alex. And Vicki, for popularizing it--between us.

25. “Echo” by Incubus (February 21, 2002): Ultimately, this song reminds me of Eliot.

24. "America" by Bree Sharp (July 4, 2002): I have to be “patriotic,” but imagine Vicki and Lindsay belting out this song…

23. “Elias” by Dispatch (June 30, 2002): Vicki, who has memorized the whole beginning part.

22. “Don’t Stop Dancing” by Creed (December 2, 2002): Reminds me of walks on the quad. Thanks, David.

21. "I Woke Up in a Car" by Something Corporate (August 25, 2002): I originally dedicated this song to Morgan W., probably for knowing it in the first place. Dunno why I have such a strong connection with this song. Reminds me of the drive to Chicago.

20. “Age of Innocence” by Smashing Pumpkins (February 12, 2002): This song is one that I assumed I would have seen earlier on a list. Reminds me of the Smashing Pumpkins concert my sophomore year and the bouncing mosh pit. I also think about driving and my dorm room, strangely.

19. “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack (March 8, 2002): “To the people who keep me going--you know who you are.”

18. “It’s Over” by Goo Goo Dolls (June 6, 2002): Peter chuckled when he saw this song on a mix I made him. Ha.

17. "Great Indoors" by John Mayer (July 17, 2002): I don’t know why I love this song, but it was part of the encore at the concert.

16. “La Cienega Just Smiled” by Ryan Adams (June 16, 2002): My favorite song on his CD. Reminds me of Oregon.

15. “Lucky Denver Mint” by Jimmy Eat World (March 24, 2002): Apparently I declared this song my theme song in March. It’s another song that has always been important to me.

14. “Flake” by Jack Johnson (June 1, 2002): Overplayed, but Vicki discovered it before!—oh wait, Andrew discovered him before…

13. “Somewhere in the Middle,” by Dishwalla (May 30, 2002): Originally reminded me of Peter, but I have many other summer memories that I associate with this song.

12. “Heaven" by DJ Sammy: yes, overplayed, but a great work-out song. Reminds me of the summer, particularly Eliot. 11. "Space to Share" by Scapegoat Wax (January 22, 2002): For Andrew and Vicki, who “popularized” the song.

10. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen (January 24, 2002): I associate this song with Lindsay as well as Graham House (John, Tim, and Yitz—and Alan and Dan. Woah.)

9. “When The Levee Breaks,” by Led Zeppelin (May 21, 2002): Peter pointed out that Zeppelin mentions “Chicago.” Yep, it got me prepared.

8. "This Is The Place" by Red Hot Chili Peppers (August 22, 2002): Third song on the RHCP CD, the first one I “discovered.” Makes me think of the summer and September.

7. “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton (March 4, 2002): Yeah, so this song is perhaps one of the most overplayed songs ever known to man, but who cannot help but understand…? Jessie+John and long distance in general; Peter and Iowa, we think; Andrew and Adams Morgan...

6. "In My Place" by Coldplay (August 27, 2002): Did I mention that I love this CD? I listened this song on repeat on the cruise as I watched the waves.

5. “Big Machine,” by Goo Goo Dolls (April 21, 2002): Originally for Peter, but now I associate this song much more with Jessie and GW.

4. “11am” by Incubus (February 21, 2002): “I am only a man.”

3. “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne (June 23, 2002): I don’t really like her voice, but the song is so catchy. I definitely associate this song with the summer and Vicki.

2. "Jesse’s Girl" by Rick Springfield (July 8, 2002): “for Lindsay because of Dang; for Vicki and Katty because of their drumming; and for Frans who definitely loved hearing us all belt out this song!” What a drive!

1. “Champagne High,” by Sister Hazel (May 7, 2002): Somehow this song fit everything. Loved hearing it at the Sister Hazel concert this summer.

Musician of the Year: Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Coldplay are pretty much tied in my mind.
Best Album: “A Rush of Blood to the Head” by Coldplay, “By the Way” by Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Gold” by Ryan Adams, “Gravity” by Our Lady Peace, “Morning View” by Incubus, and mixes to last a lifetime.

40. Schism—Tool; "I know the pieces fit"--the puzzle song, reminds me of the summer

37. Here’s to the Night—Eve 6; the most overplayed song on this list, but it reminds me of NCS prom
36. Lullaby—Billy Joel; if you’ve never heard it, download it now. It is one of the saddest but sweetest songs I have ever heard. I just discovered it this week.
35. Just to Be the Next to Be with You—Mr. Big; a "subject" with Jarryd.
34. Angel—Dave Matthews Band; sweet song, memories of March

32 Ice Cream—Sarah McLachlan; "Your love is better than ice cream, better than anything I’ve ever tried…"

30. Stuck in a Moment—U2; yeah, I got myself stuck in a moment and only until recently have been able to get out of it. Think what you will.
29. Saints and Sailors—Dashboard Confessional; another song Kimi introduced to me. I actually like the whole CD, but this was the song that caught my ear first. You might want to check them out, too.

28. Life is a Highway—Tom Cochran; NCS Class of 2002, baby!
27. Deep Enough—Live; off their new CD, which is actually pretty good, reminds me of Alex for some reason

15. Wonderland—John Mayer; too much to say about this one
14. The General—Dispatch; lessee… Oxford, Lindsay and Lauren, Andrew, Michael and Jeff… how many more associations can I have? "You are young, you must be living. Go now, you are forgiven."

10. In the End—Linkin’ Park; this song has gotten me through the end of this year, makes me think of Jessie
9. 3x5—John Mayer; everyone should listen to this song: "I overcame trying to fit the world into a picture frame…" It makes me think of all my friends who try too desperately to capture everything with their cameras. In particular, it reminds me of Peter; he knew I would like this song before I even listened to it.
8. Superman—Five for Fighting; anyone can relate to this song. Thanks to Lindsay for introducing it to me… before it was played on 104.3 all the time!

1. It’s Been a While—Staind; Peter, though most powerfully at the beginning of the year.

Musician of the Year: John Mayer (could you have guessed?)
