Music in the 90's and Beyond

HOME

This is my newest endeavor; mocking the music we are made to listen to by radio stations and MTV.

Ill start off by sayin that the 90's did bring about some great acts:Nirvana, Tool, Alice in Chains, Korn, and even bands like TLC or Refuge All stars ( to name a few not rock acts). However, in the latter half of the 90's music as we know it hit the fan. With the advent of napster, focus shifted from albums, to songs individually, this was the beggining of the hole. 90 percent of bands seen on mtv air songs that, tho commercially successful, or merely fruitcakes wrapped in sound. The songs themselves are as deep as a childs wading pool, and the bands images reflect(rock mainly) the troubled frontman and his friends. Though this has often been the backdrop for almost all rock bands of the 90's, it has become a cleche, used only by money seeking pill poppers. Bands like Nickelback, Disturbed and Drowning Pool appear as saddened souls, finding a meaning in life....to get attention. Take a second to consider what getting the backing of a music label takes these days. Music is not the only factor now-a-days, you must put on a good show. You must project an image that will capture potential fans, and keep them there. What im getting at is simple; Money has prevailed over art, and the art of music is becoming extinct. The industry has grown beyond all expectations, and have mastered the skills nessessary to gain massive financial gain.

As a result, music value has dropped. A mere 3 years ago i could listen to 3 songs from an album, then decide to buy the album. I would sit and listen to the entire album, and more often than not, would love the entire thing.Take Tool's Cd undertow for example; I bought it and within an hour I was a solid Tool fan. The entire cd was a piece art. Every song was presented in a professional, and completed manner. 10 seconds of listening(to any song) told me automatically that these guys cared.

It's bands like this that keep the music industry going. Of course Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys are well known and rich, but who fucking cares? Sure the songs you hear on mtv are catchy, and like it or not stick in your head(mostly because they need X amount of minutes in a cd, and they run out of those shitty ass lyrics so they repeat the same lines over and over and over and over Coughdestiny'schildsurvivorlast5minutesofthatsongCough) but what is it worth? without Mtv, what would you do? How would a mere sound coming from the radio influence you? No giant tits, no shaking ass's, what would you do? I use Tool as an example again; how often do you see them on Mtv? How often do you hear them on rock radio?Alot more often that on Mtv. Their public image is not to have one. Their own music videos dont even show a single member of the band, but heres the kicker, the guitarist made the video! what a concept, and not only that, but they make with their own minds and own 2 hands, every single song on every album with the name Tool on it! The same can be said for many bands. Staind(tho they're fading into the Mtv spotlight just as fast as they fell into it) and Pearl Jam.

Now my view extend much, much further than i have stated, however i will leave you with this tonight- What would you do without MTV? -
