Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
Welcome!. Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
is the typical north-american decayed neighborhood.Once one of the richest part of our
city,it is the today by far the poorest.
The neighborhood is
huge.It starts at downtown, and goes as far as Dickson street. It went under some major
demolitions during the 70s,80 and even today. As a proof, the long time abandonned Canadian
Vickers plant was demolished last year.
This ex-city was the dream
of the Dufresne's brothers, who wanted to create a model industrial suburb(yeah,Hochelaga
was a suburb back then). It did work pretty well for a few years, but in 1918 the city was
overuned by the costs and merged with Montreal.
From 100,000 in 1950,the
population is barely 32,000 today. Not a single factory is still open. Its eastern part,
around Jacques-Cartier bridge and Radio-Canada tower,was massively demolished,and is now a
no-men-land.
In its western part,you can
find abandonned castle, once homes of Montreal's industrials. In the middle, were located
most of the middle class homes, many middle-sized workshops and the Main
streets(Ste-catherine and Ontario streets).Today, those streets are, except maybe with a few
ones in Saint-Henri, the most desolated streets in our city.
The buildings's pages are now beeing revised for better and updated infos. Also, many new
pictures&buildings coming soon. |
