*As
lead singer of Impellitteri, millions were introduced to the powerful and
driving
voice of Rob Rock. After years with one of rock’s biggest bands ,
Rob Rock
is back on his own as a solo artist. Rob Rock talks about "Impellitteri",
"Randy Rhoads tribute" and Rage of Creation.
The Rock-Impellitteri
Advocacy:
I know you have probably been asked this question
many times
Rob, and if you don’t care to discuss it, that’s alright. Practically
everyone wants to know what has happened to IMPELLITTERI, do you care
to comment?
Rob Rock:
Well, first of
all, Chris and I are still friends. We've been business
partners
for 8 years running and during that time we've both discussed
doing solo
albums. Now, finally, I was able to do mine after several years
of hoping
and planning and waiting for the right timing for everything to
come together.
When Chris realized that I was actually doing it, he had new
thoughts
about it and was uncomfortable with me having a solo career.
We've decided
that we would pursue our careers separately now and so I've moved forward
as a solo artist and Chris is working on his new plans for his career.
I wanted to close the Impellitteri chapter with the Crunch tour, but Chris
just wanted to move ahead with his own plans so he cancelled the
tour.
We've made some great albums together and leave the door open for the distant
future. For the immediate future, I plan to tour and promote my
"Rage of
Creation" album and carry on as a solo artist while I do other
recording
projects that may come up.
TRIAd:
You did some cover songs from the new “Randy Rhoads tribute”
album,
how did that come about? Did you try to sing or copy the voice of
Ozzy?
RR:
The producer Michael Wagener, who mixed several Impellitteri albums, called
me and asked if I would participate in his project. I also participated
in the
original Randy Rhoads Benefit concert in L.A. in 1991and thought it
would be
fitting seeing as my first album (M.A.R.S.Project:Driver) was with
with Rudy
Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge from the Ozzy Osbourne band "Blizzard of Oz" which
included Randy Rhoads. Randy has always been my favorite
guitarist
of all time so it's a true tribute from me to him to be involved
in the
recording.
I just
sang the songs naturally and did several tracks. Michael decided to
mix all
the tracks together (instead of using just one) and that makes it
sound kind
of like Ozzy because he uses several tracks in his mixes too. I
did not
try to copy Ozzy's voice because there's only one Ozzy! Besides,
it's a
Randy Rhoads Tribute, not an Ozzy tribute..
TRIAd:Let
us talk about your upcoming album. Where did the album title
“Rage of
Creation” comes from?
RR:
I was trying to come up with a name that would describe the album and sound
cool. Then I was trying to find a name that would coincide with my surname
ROCK. Then I thought of "Rage Of Creation". (I never did find a
word for
the "K"!)I think the title is great and so I stuck with it. The "Rage"
and the "Creation" evoke the feeling I get when storms are approaching
or
earthquakes
are starting or anything massive and powerful that you can't
control
that puts you in a bit of danger and gets you excited and that's
when you
realize that you are alive! It's a great rush and that's what this
album is
for me!
TRIAd:What
will the fans expect from your new album?
RR:
They can expect high quality melodic metal! The songs on this album are
great and
the performances are so real!
I approached
this album with raw power and performance in mind and
natural
vibes. I did not want an over produced album. You can feel the energy we
had making this record and the love for the music shows. This is the best
album I've ever recorded!.
TRIAd:Playing
with Roy z and Jake E. Lee must have been a blast. They seemed to
have added a wild, cut loose edge to ‘Rage of Creation’, How did
you and
the rest
of the musicians in this album get hooked up?
RR:
The album vision was put together by myself, Roy Z and our good friend
Chris Leibundgut
helped us round everybody up. Everyone on the album are friends of
mine that I've know for years and when the chance came to record together,
we all put our best efforts forward and made it happen.
TRIAd:
Who produced the album?
RR:
The album was produced by Roy Z, who is the hottest metal producer today.
I'm lucky he's a good friend of mine and he was willing to fit me into
his schedule. He has recently produced the Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden
singer) solo albums "Chemical Wedding","Accident of Birth", "Scream for
me Brazil", Rob Halford's (Judas priest singer) newest release "Resurrection",
Rob Rock's "Rage of Creation", and is now finishing up Helloweens new album.
Roy also produces his own band "Tribe of Gypsies" albums. Roy is
incredible,
he's a natural talent and a great person..
TRIAd:
Who are the primary
lyricists? Was there a particular theme or message you want to convey in
the album?
RR:
Although I am the primary lyricist, Roy Z and I wrote all the songs
together.
This is not a "concept" album. It's a collection of GREAT songs.
The message
is: This is Rob Rock.
TRIAd:
Any memorable or cool stories about and during the recording of this album?
RR:
When we were recording the drum tracks, I had to fly home to Florida
because
Hurricane Floyd was approaching central Florida where I live. I got
the last
plane out of L.A. before they cancelled all flights and I rushed home
to be with
my wife and prepare the house for the storm. The storm was
so developed
and strong we thought we were going to suffer harm, but,
thank God
it passed us by without much damage. I got the satellite photo of
Hurricane
Floyd and it looks so intense I decided to use it for the album cover!
TRIAd:I
noticed that there is a lot of energy and awesome tunes in the album.
I was very
impressed on the emotions you were able to convey on “Beautiful
Lady” and
“Eagle”. “Eagle” is a brilliant cover tune, who is responsible for
choosing
that great “Abba” cover song? And without any songs in particular,
what did
you want to capture during the recording of the album in the studio?
RR:
My friend Chris Leibundgut suggested it to Roy Z, who in turn saw the
potential
for the song and suggested it to me!
I was never
a big ABBA fan, but I could hear it was a great song. Once I
envisioned
my performance as one like the Black Sabbath song "Heaven and
Hell",
I got excited and was eager to sing it. It came out great and it's a
wonderful
"live" performance that I love to listen to.
I wanted
to capture a "live" honest performance from everyone and capture
the raw
energy and life that comes from these great songs. I believe we
achieved
that and it shines through the great production of the album.
TRIAd:Tell
us about some of the band’s favorite songs, musically or lyrically, and
maybe why you like this songs.
RR:
ALL the tunes have merit! That's why they are on the album. I am so pleased
with this record.
Streets
of Madness, Media Machine, Never Too Late, are great singles and
Judgment
Day, Eagle, Forever, are epic album tracks. In the Night, One Way
Out, All
I need, are classic metal tunes and the opener is just killer with
The Sun
Will Rise Again.
Beautiful
Lady is an intimate ballad that will be the Japan bonus track.
Lyrically,
I go with the vibe of the song and the lyrics convey a wide
range of
subjects. They're what you expect , positive, street-wise and
catchy.
It's a great record and I'm really grateful!
TRIAd:You’re
album will be heading over all Asia and to Europe soon. How are
you feeling
about it?
RR:
I'm feeling great!!! I pray I can lock-in releases for all territories
across
the globe and get the album out everywhere by October/November 2000.
The industry response has been incredible and the timing seems to be good,
especially in Europe.
TRIAd:
If you could tour
with any band, who would you most like to tour with?
RR:
Promo tours with magazines and interviews would be great, but a "live"
tour would be super! It's in the Lord's hands what will happen next, I'm
just
going to
prepare and have faith that it will happen. I'd like to tour with
Iron Maiden, or Ozzy or even Creed or Rob Zombie. That's the
big pie! But I'm willing to tour anywhere they'll have me for the love
of the music and for the relationship with the fans. It doesn't have to
be huge. Whatever there is to do, I want to do it. I want to play "live"!
I've been doing albums for years now and I'd like to tour. I hope it all
comes together now.
TRIAd:What,
if anything else, have you been doing with your voice lately?
RR:
Well, I've been writing songs with the legendary L.A. band Warrior.
The
main guy,
Joe Floyd, helped Roy Z and I mix my solo album. He really loves
my solo
album, my voice, style, melodies and lyrics, so after my album was
finished,
Joe asked me to sing on his new album and help him write it.
Seeing
as I'm a solo artist now, I can do outside projects like Warrior if
I want
to. I decided that I would do it because I have great respect for
the band
and their classic metal style..
TRIAd:
Thank you very much
for your support and any concluding comments?
RR:
I thank you and everyone out there for their support! I am SURE that you
will love
"Rage of Creation" and it will hopefully be released worldwide by
October/November.
In the meantime, it's out in Japan and I encourage you to get it as soon
as you can.Thanks.
