I first saw Soulwax at V2000 but they just seemed unmemorable, not doing anything much, although I wasn't paying that much attention at all it must be said! However, after hearing about all the things they do in their typical live show (from Tom yet again!), I knew I couldn't miss this. Ladytron opened the night with a robot-like performance but, unlike Grandaddy, they didn't combine this with warmth and just seemed a bit dull. Loads of black clothes and very moody, so I'm a bit surprised to see they've made a proper career for themselves, but I haven't heard them since so who knows, maybe they've turned great and I should give them another chance? Soulwax were not as good as I expected, as they didn't give us The Complete Soulwax Experience. They should have covered Backstreet's Back and apparently they normally have a mental crowd but not tonight.

However, we still got the Casio guitar (the most amazing instrument ever fact fans!) brilliantly utilised for a rendition of The Empire Strikes Back theme and a chant of "C A S I O". They also had flashing mic stands that came into play for the singles, which were brilliantly done. Don't think I knew the album very well back then though, which held back my enjoyment considerably. Their random pointing, shifting weight and standing still dancing technique was legendary though, and it's no surprise that I've emulated it many times, looking cooler than everyone else whilst expending a fraction of the energy that dancing usually takes up. The roadies also had fun swapping the instruments when the band members stood still, and their white suits looked great. At V2000 they seemed dull, here they were good: the sad thing is that I haven't seen them do great yet. Afterwards I also had the good fortune to meet the band and got them to sign the base of a McDonald's cup that I still have today! I told them to come back and play again soon, but instead they went off to become DJs. On the evidence of this show, being a "proper" band should always be their main vocation!
