GIG NUMBER FOUR
Who
I suppose it says something about the excitement-factor of the Stereophonics that there's very little detail I remember of the show now. Looking at the setlist though, it seems like it was a good run of songs. The crowd were quite insane, with a mental crush and moshpit (whenever possible), and everyone fell over on several occasions! I eventually got to the front too, where I'm sure I got the attention of Richard several times. I think the band had a screen behind them but have no specific memory of this now. The only tune I remember enjoying now was Plastic California, and that's only because I never liked it on record so was pleased by how much better it seemed! Most interesting though was the fact this show made my first four gigs the Big Four of Welsh music! Compared to most other music scenes, the Welsh one actually existed and was exciting, and there really did seem a point when every Welsh band was releasing excellent songs!

It's a fact often obscured now, but the Stereophonics used to be alright. Their debut album Word Gets Around was very good, and even the more chart-orientated follow-up Performance And Cocktails wasn't too bad. I'd got tickets for this show before their popularity really exploded but by the time it had arrived tickets had long sold out (stopping most of my mates from being able to go) and the band well on their path to selling out and venturing into dreary MOR shit territory, material naturally lapped up by the masses! But, let's be fair, they were still a decent live act when this show came about and it can only be put down to my psychic powers when I predicted they'd sell out big-time before I'd even heard the fuck-awful Mr Writer! So anyway, The Crockett's opened with an incredibly fun support slot, highlighted by a song based on the lyric "I don't fucking think so." They jumped around the stage a lot, and even got the crowd moshing a bit for them! It was mindless stuff but entertaining.
