Nick won tickets so what could I say? The Divine Comedy for free? Who could I complain! But, although winning tickets was nice and all, I can't pretend the gig was. After Mathew Jay opened things with a very dull indie set, The Divine Comedy came on and proceeded to not play ANY song we knew for a whole hour. Their arrogance was breathtaking, just playing the new album with absolutely no concession to the songs that briefly made them famous. The new songs were dull, lacking the pomp that made their older numbers occasionally great. Throughout this certain members of the audience were going crazy, blind to the fact that they were being fobbed off by a b-sides show, but the general public are hardly a bastion for good taste anyway! Finally, after an hour of shit distinguished only by a gong onstage, they played Generation Sex, which was quite good.

They also played Frog Princess, which was the only truly memorable song of the night. However, other hits were overlooked. Where were The Pop Singer's Fear Of The Pollen Count, Something For The Weekend, Everybody Knows (Except You), Songs Of Love, Gin Soaked Boy, or I've Been To A Marvellous Party?! Left from the set to make way for apparently 10 of the 11 tracks from their latest album, that's where! I suppose I should be remotely grateful they played National Express - their greatest song - and got the setlist. But this was grudgingly performed solo by Neil, who had the crazy idea that the song was shit and that his new stuff was good. We sang it back at him as loudly as possible to make sure he couldn't escape from his greatest hit! Maybe one day he'll understand. Afterwards I stood outside but the band couldn't be bothered to meet their fans, so they missed the chance to slightly redeem themselves. In many ways this was rock bottom. A poor support, and the worst setlist I'd ever experienced from the main act. And still so many of their fans were conned into accepting this as a proper show! But, with 21 gigs and 3 festivals already behind me, such mediocrity could fool me no more. Divine Comedy? No, just a very bad joke!
