Slash Sticks Up For Axl

Wednesday September 12, 2001 @ 03:30 PM

By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Slash "Are Guns N' Roses getting back together?" Typical question that guitar virtuoso and ex-G N' R tophatter Slash has heard time and time again since his departure in '93 from rock 'n' roll's biggest, loudest band of the '80s. It's true that he's somewhat adjusted to it by answering with a simple and tolerable "No" and an added "Next question, please," but it seems that any animosity between the man first born as Saul Hudson and the still only remaining original G N' R member/screamer Axl Rose is non-existent. Actually, Slash is being a bit of a big brother to him. "I don't like people talking shit about Axl behind his back," so says Slash passionately on the line from a bar (where else?) in New York, where he's staying to play the second and last night of Michael Jackson's All-Star Tribute Concert. "He's still a brother. I stick up for him."

There might still be love thrown Axl's way, but that doesn't stop the whole mess of legalities that's still going on from the break-up of the band. Let's clear this up first for those kiddies who don't know: After the band disbanded in '93, '94 legal rights to the G N' R name "supposedly" shifted to Rose who's continued on with the band's name. "That's actually a topic which we're trying to get to the bottom of," he states. "Originally, the other guys in the band gave it up. Now that I know a little bit more about this stuff, I'm trying to look for a loophole [to get some control back]."

9/9/01 AXL MENTIONED on Blind Melon Behind the Music

Thanks to Chery Rose and Jonathan Lee 2TI

Shannon Hoon always carried a video camera everywhere he went and when he was in the studio with Gn'R he told Axl to say hello to Ms. Hoon, his mom, and then he put Axl on camera and Axl goes "Yo, Merry Christmas" or something like that. Then Shannon says "see mom, they're not satan worshippers" and then he showed a little Christmas tree in the studio. It also showed Slash in the studio. This Blind Melon Behind the Music is very, very sad:(. But, it also made me miss Axl....seeing young Axl and Slash in the studio recording UYI...

Early in the show, it talked about his cover band, which covered Don't Cry back in the late 80s. Then it showed a shot of some of his journals and I saw something about Mank Rage, the band that Dave Lank, Mike Staggs, and Paul Tobias (and I think Roger Miley as well) was in. Then of course it showed what you were talking about and showed some of the Don't Cry video. Also, I don't know if anyone else noticed, but that part where Shannon delivers the pizza onstage naked is at a GN'R concert on June 16, 1993 at Fussballstadion St. Jakob, Basel, Switzerland (and he most likely got that viking helmet when they were in Oslo, Norway with GN'R, a few days before.) That show was cool...

9/7/01 SLASH MENTIONS AXL/NEW GN'R ON STERN SHOW

Thanks to Paula at Gnrunlimited

Howard says I have to ask you about Axl and the new Guns N' Roses... Slash said it would have been much cooler if he had gotten the new band together under a new name to do "the music that drove everyone else away." He said the rest of the band gave him the name, thinking "what are we gonna do with it," but there has been some talk recently about legal action, because you "have these kids walking around with new GN'R jackets who don't know it's a different band." [Not sure exactly what he meant, but in that context I was thinking perhaps they aren't getting a cut of the current and future merchandising and would like to.] Howard asked if they could ever get back together, and Slash said first Axl has to put out his new thing because he's been working on it for 6 years (Slash: "I would've been pushing up daisies if I had to wait that long"). But after that, if they got the original guys, , got rid of the GN'R business machine - which he said is "really screwed up" - and all went into group therapy for 6 or 7 months, that maybe they could work together on a song for a movie soundtrack or something [He sounded pretty serious when he said this - well, I'm not sure about the therapy part - but not a bad idea, IMO ]. He said things got too big too fast and just snowballed, and they were being led by someone who wasn't in touch with reality [Again, in the context, not sure who he meant, Dough or Axl - I assumed Axl, though ]. Slash said they've gotten huge offers just to do one gig and Axl won't do them even if he "needs the money." He theorized that Axl must need the money, because big rock bands have a lot of expenses and put out a lot of money, and there hasn't been any coming in from new product for the past 6 years... he said something like "of course I haven't been getting any." Slash said he was working on a new project, not Snakepit but something "very cool" and he was really excited about it and that was the end.

9/4/01 ROBIN FINK PERFORMS FOR RICK RUBIN WITH OTHERS & NEW FINK TUNE FROM GHOST OF MARS SOUNDTRACK

Seemslikesalvation

Former Nine Inch Nails' guitarist, Robin Finck, who is heavily involved with Guns 'N' Roses, recently united with many popular rock artists recently to give a beneficial concert at producer Rick Rubin's Hollywood mansion. Among those fortunate artists included Crazy Town, Rob Zombie, One Side Zero, Shuvel, and Tommy Stinson.

Everything that was collected during the event is going to be directed to 'Schools on Wheels', a charitable association dedicated to helping homeless children get an education.

Countless artists have recorded their albums in Rubin's famous mansion; thus it is the case for Red Hot Chili Peppers (Blood Sugar Sex Magik) or Marilyn Manson. It was reported the celebration finalized with an impressive fireworks display, which lasted into the wee hours of the morning.

Fans should note, as previously reported on SLS News, Robin Finck courtesy appears on John Carpenter's "Ghost of Mars" soundtrack with former Guns N' Roses guitarist Buckethead on the track "Love Seige". If interested, Carpenter's official site hosts a five minute mp3 sample of the instrumental tune at this web address. (See, "Robin Finck/Buckethead To Be On Carpenter Soundtrack")

Also, which was exclusively reported on SLS News last month, there's still no new information regarding both NIN's Danny Lohner and Finck's contribution to Clint Mansell's "Rain" soundtrack except that it's still scheduled for release by the end of the year.
