GN'R to Headline Brit Fest Foos, Offspring, Strokes onboard for Reading, Leeds

Guns n' Roses return to the festival jungle, headlining Britain's Carling Weekend August 23-25. Joining the Axl Rose-fronted outfit as headliners will be the Foo Fighters, Offspring, the Prodigy, Pulp, and the Strokes, who were upgraded from a small tented arena to the main stage last year after their record, Is This It, took off in the U.K. The festival's four stages will be dominated by North American acts, including Slipknot, Jane's Addiction, Puddle of Mudd, Weezer, the Dandy Warhols, Incubus, NOFX, Mercury Rev, the White Stripes, Less Than Jake, Andrew W.K., Sum 41 and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

The bands will rotate between the two sites: Reading's Richfield Avenue (located about an hour outside of London) and Leeds' Temple Newsam Park (in Northern England). While the other acts will play both shows, Guns n' Roses will only perform at Leeds on Friday August 23rd.

Tickets for the event are on sale now through promoter Mean Fiddler's Web site, www.meanfiddler.com.

04/30/02 GN'R TO PLAY UK - CARLING WEEKEND BILL REVEALED

nme.com

NME.COM can exclusively announce the line-up for this year’s CARLING WEEKEND FESTIVAL – and there’s a few surprises.
NME readers’ favourite band The Strokes, winners of three NME Carling Awards this year, are to co-headline the main stage of the festival which takes place in Reading and Leeds over the Bank Holiday weekend of August 23-26. The Strokes weren’t planning to return to the UK this year, but they have been persuaded to play the Carling Weekend and this will be the only chance to see the New Yorkers again in 2002. By August, the band should also be ready to unveil more new songs which are destined for the follow-up to their hit debut ‘Is This It’. The Strokes and Pulp are the co-headliners at Reading on Friday (August 23) and Leeds on Saturday (August 24), with Weezer and The White Stripes also appearing on those days.

The real surprise is the long threatened return of legendary rock band Guns 'N Roses, who are co-headlining the Carling Weekend at Leeds on Friday, August 23. Due to other commitments, though, Guns 'N Roses will not play Reading.
Jane's Addiction, another rock giant from the past, are also confirmed to play the festival – an exclusive appearance and the band’s first show in the UK for a decade. Prodigy also return to play their first UK shows in four years, co-headlining Reading on Sunday (August 25) and Leeds on Friday (August 23). Their long-awaited new single, set to be ‘Baby’s Got A Temper’, is due for release in July. US rockers The Offspring appear on the same bill, co-headlining at Reading only.

Foo Fighters headline Reading on Saturday (August 24) and Leeds on Sunday (August 25). Also appearing on this bill are Muse (with their only UK shows this year), Ash, Sum 41, A, Less Than Jake and Andrew WK, with further special guests to be announced.

On the Carling Weekend bill for Prodigy, The Offspring and Guns 'N Roses, NME.COM can also reveal that Slipknot, Incubus and NOFX will be playing. The headliners of the Evening Session Stage are confirmed as Feeder, as tipped on NME.COM, Spiritualized and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The first act announced for the Dance Stage is The Streets.

Tickets are priced £90 plus booking fee for the weekend, including camping and parking. Day tickets are priced £39 plus booking fee. For tickets call the NME Ticketline on 0870 1 663 663. Calls are charged at national standard rate.

Hello all.... well, I guess I am the only Japanese on this list.

I checked out the web site and unfortunately, GNR is only mentioned in 2nd paragraph.

Here is what basically says:

GNR will be the headliner for outside stage, Offspring will headline on another date. You dont need any explanation about GNR, they were the biggest ROCK STAR in 80's. It's been since "Rock in Rio" that they will play in FESTIVAL, also it's been since 1993 when they played in TOKYO DOME that they will play in Japan.

The rest is talking about all the bands who will play and little history about them.

There are 2 venues for this event, and it's not in Tokyo, but Chiba which is next province from tokyo, and Osaka.

There is no mention of which date or which venue GNR will play, IF they decided to go and actually play!!

Price of ticket, wow..... its 12500 yen for one day and 22000 yen for both days, as pf yesterday, $1 = 130 yen, so you do the math. Too much, that I can tell you all.

03/30/02 REPLACEMENTS MULL REUNION

Thanks to Cady @gnrunlimited
RollingStone.com

Eleven years after the Replacements called it quits, the group is eyeing an reunion. "We'll get together again one day," says former frontman Paul Westerberg. "It will take a while, or it might take a few legal swipes of the pen, but we ain't over."

A partial reunion nearly happened last month when bassist Tommy Stinson planned to join Westerberg on a tour of the Midwest. "He and I and [drummer] Michael Bland were going to retrace Buddy Holly's steps on the Winter Carnival [which promoters continued despite Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens losing their lives in a plane crash. "We figured we would avenge their deaths," Westerberg says -- but Stinson had to back out because of duties with his current band, Guns n' Roses.

Stinson and Westerberg did regroup in the studio, however, as Stinson supplies backing vocals on a handful of tracks on Westerberg's new solo albums, Mono (released under the alias Granpaboy) and Stereo. "I called him in February to say, 'Let's do this,'" Westerberg says. "He was the only guy in the world I knew who could play the bass and sing that part, without even having to listen to it."

Westerberg has also bounced the idea of a reunion off the Replacements' other surviving founding member, drummer Chris Mars, after a chance meeting in Westerberg's driveway. (Guitarist Bob Stinson -- Tommy's older brother -- left the group in 1986 and was replaced by Slim Dunlap. Bob died from a drug overdose in 1995). "[Mars] was riding by with his wife in a convertible and I didn't recognize him," Westerberg says. "He pulled up in front of my house, and I thought, 'Who is this asshole?' Because he'd gained a little weight, but he looked really happy and was happy as a clam. I said, 'So what do you say? Should we put it together?' And he kind of laughed and said, 'Maybe for a week.' I read him instantly that he had moved on from this. He would do it for a week, but he wouldn't want to rehearse and stuff -- but he would be up for a few laughs."

In the event of a new Replacements album, Westerberg doubts that he and Stinson -- who, since leaving the Replacements, has fronted bands of his own, first Bash and Pop, then Perfect -- would collaborate on new material. "The closest we ever came to collaborating was on [1990 b-side] 'Satellite,'" he says. "That was all his song and I sort of suggested the 'la la la' part and changed one other part, but it was his song and he had done that for me a few times. We would do that again, but we would never sit down toe to toe and write a song because we're both songwriters. It's like Van Morrison couldn't sit down and write a song with Bob Dylan."

As for his own music, Westerberg declined to tour after the release of his last album Suicaine Gratifaction and he's still weighing his options this time out. "I have to create something to make it exciting for me again," he says, "because I'm no closer to wanting to get up and play my entire catalog for my fans as I was three or four years ago. I think we're getting close to the notion of me doing in-stores."

GN'R Whats going on?
Axl's People Speak!

Guns N' Roses' management company have broken their long silence and spoken exclusively to Kerrang! about the band's gameplan for 2002. -shortly after Axl Rose reportedly fired key members of his staff.

Rose has spent the last eight years working on the new Guns N' Roses album, which has been thought to bear the title 'Chinese Democracy'. the front man has only performed in public at New Year's shows in Las Vegas in 2000 and 2001.

Up until recently, he was working on the album with Roy Thomas Baker, the celebrated producer who handled Queen's classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. However, Baker has now been fired along with Tom Zutaut, the bands A&R man. Zutaut became semi-famous in the late 80's when The Nymphs frontlady Inger Lorre reportedly urinated on his desk at Geffen records.

While such upheavals might suggest that the release of a new Guns N' Roses album is even further off than exspected, a spokesperson for their management insists that alls well.

"I went to the studio three weeks ago and heard 41 songs," he tells us "Your gonna be blown away when you hear them. All this stuff in the papers is rubish: Axls got himself together and he's amking an incredible, important record."

The spokesperson adds the record MAY NOT be called "The Chinese Democracy".

"Was it EVER called that?" he laughs, alluding to the media confusion around the project.

The new GNR album has seen contributions from numerous musicians. Among them is Queen guitrist Brian May.

"That was years ago! Literally two years ago. I was working in Capitol Studios in LA and met our old producer Roy Baker. He told me he was off to produce GunsN' Roses.

May describes the material he worked on as "fantastic. I was shocked that they didn't put it out straight away. Maybe its perfection on Axl's part - the desire to make it THE album of all time. I played on three tracks, i don't know if they'll be used. I don't wanna ask!"

The album's protected genesis seems to be down to Roses determination to make it worth the wait.

"he's completely immersed in making this record," say the managment spokesperson. "The 41 songs I heard were from the 60 or 70 he's working on."

"It has to be the best in Axl's own mind," continues May, "And an expression of his personal feelings. He's very passionate about it - every single word and note is very personal."

The album is now set for release in the second half of 2002. There are no confirmed song titles.

"This album will make a big impact on people," assures the management spokesperson. "People think they have all the answers, but the music will do the talking."

The Virtues of Virtual www.techtv.com/audiofile/...42,00.html

By AudioFile staff
March 6, 2002

Many musicians now lean toward the virtual side of music tech. That's not a news flash, as the tools of the trade are getting smaller and more powerful with each passing day.

"Audiofile" spoke with Brian Mantia, otherwise known as Brain and currently the drummer for Guns 'N Roses, about portable music tech. During his 25 years in the industry, he has seen music technology blossom and gleefully takes full advantage of the virtual realm.

"With technology and the way things are going today, I wanted to go virtual -- with the PowerBook and what I have I can basically make a whole album in a week in a hotel room," says Brain.

"I like using Logic as my main sequencer -- I call it a composing instrument [and] because of the MIDI, I have all these VST instruments. I can use Reactor [and] Battery by Native Instruments. It's great because it's all-in-one. Where -- before you'd need a huge rack to get that."

Brain has done stints with Les Claypool's Primus, and underground sensations Godflesh and Limbo Maniacs. He's proud to have never worked a regular job.
