Here it is, plain as I can
make it
driving on a highway, pouring rain
mist from trucks and cars blinding you
no sun, ominous clouds
can’t see the white side lines
wipers banging, not helping
that stupid fog on the inside windshield
Overpass approaching, glide under
the other side, the rain is driving
mist is as bad as before, slow going
just for you, not for me
the sun is shining, sky denim blue
wipers not needed
window so clear it looks like there is no glass
I see deer ahead, ½ mile or more
exit sign coming up, I can read it from here
hawk circling the road
I can count the feathers in her tail
I just knew it, I’m right
I’m holding intellectual debates with you and your friends
I’m easily winning them all, solving the problems of the world
I’m singing the songs on the radio, the words I just know
I’m thinking about what to do if I have a blow out here
no problem, got it all planned out,
I’ve developed contingency plans for the others on the road
thinking about what to do when I get home
prioritizing the 15 or so major projects to do
my brain’s on cruise control, 10% level or lower
you’re looking at me strange
why am I doing 90 in the rain
I’m manic, you’re not
your foggy road never clears
my life is perfect except for one thing,
it returns,
that god awful rain
