TRACKS CONSIDERED ~ Track Reviews E-G

A-Z

~ Eye Dance ~ Eye of the Lens ~ Field of Tall Flowers ~ Gone ~ Goat Of The West ~

Eye Dance

VINYL ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1981)
CASSETTE ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1981)
CD ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1995); Time Considered As A Helix Of Semi-Precious Stones - The BBC Sessions 1979-84 (UK 1992)
Excellent first track on the album; it has an explosive, exciting beginning. Brash rhythms and the hard edge of Steve's voice makes this rock track a very unconvential serenade!

Was it my imagination, working over time again
Or did we make a strange connection
Just then
Some things are never spoken
Some things are never done
But if we could forget our manners
Just once

If I asked you what would you do
Would you think it over
We see strange things every day
Would you think it over

Some things changed in your expression
Maybe I should explain
‘Cos it could be my imagination
Again

Eye Of The Lens

VINYL SINGLE: Eye of the Lens (UK 1981 7" & 12" EP live); You Move Me (UK 1984 12" & 12" picture disc)
VINYL ALBUM: Enz (Holland 1983, UK 1984)
CD ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1995); Time Considered As A Helix Of Semi-Precious Stones - The BBC Sessions 1979-84 (UK 1992)
Harsh, chilling sound and story. The lyrics are delivered in an unnervingly flat, fatalistic tone. Possibly their darkest track, certainly their most unsettling. "Can the camera steal your soul? In certain ways, I think so. A horror story of the most basic kind, but not without a little irony. I hope."

I'm walking down a street where children play
When they see me they run away
She will not look at me, she won't say why
And when I ask her she just cries
No-one will talk to me, they turn to go
Their faces say there's something I should know
Could I be a victim of the games of all my friends
Or am I really being watched by the eye of the lens
My world is empty now, no-one comes near
No-one can stand the smell of fear
Hours pass so slowly, time beats a drum
As I wait for what I hope won't come
No-one will talk to me, they turn to go
Their faces say there's something I should know
Could I be a victim of the games of all my friends
Or am I really being watched by the eye of the lens
Something's coming closer, I can only stare
The scream of silence fills the air
I was not a victim of the games of all my friends
Now I find myself behind the eye of the lens...

Field Of Tall Flowers

VINYL SINGLE: Field of Tall Flowers (UK 1993)
CD SINGLE: Field of Tall Flowers (UK 1993)
VINYL ALBUM: My Mind's Eye (UK 1992)
CD ALBUM: My Mind's Eye (UK 1992); Unravelled (Holland & UK 1996 acoustic remix)
Steve and a piano. Gentle, melodic and bitter-sweet. Dare I call it "nice"? It is! Sad too, though, of course!
Falling through the summer haze / All my thoughts have blown away

Goat Of The West

VINYL SINGLE: Eye of the Lens (UK 1981 12" EP)
VINYL ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1981)
CASSETTE ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1981)
CD ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1995)
One of the dark, brooding ones, for sure; Andy sings plaintively somewhere between Steve's chilling lines. Someone has been removed...What is his name? It evokes George Orwell's nightmare vision Nineteen Eighty-Four; when they come for you in the night you don't just disappear physically, you cease to exist...

He has played his biggest part
His country took him to his heart
The latest episode on the world wide screen
And it’s the worst one I’ve ever seen

It’s so funny
Did you see what happened
It’s so funny
But I’m not laughing

He has lost his winning smile
He has to show he’s human too
I think we’ll have to wait for a long time
‘Cos I just don’t believe that it’s true

And I don’t believe it

Gone

VINYL SINGLE: Eye of the Lens (UK 1981 12" EP)
VINYL ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1981)
CASSETTE ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1981)
CD ALBUM: Sleep No More (UK 1995); Time Considered As A Helix Of Semi-Precious Stones - The BBC Sessions 1979-84 (UK 1992)

So tired, so soon
What happened to you
What happened to you
You got lost
somewhere between
Away round here
somewhere between
So far so near
You got lost
Somewhere between
What happened to you

Someone has been removed
What happened to her
What happened to her
She got lost
somewhere between
Away round here
somewhere between
So far so near
She got lost
Somewhere between
What happened to her

You used to be so young
You used to be so young
It was going to take so long
The beat has almost gone...
What is his name...................?
