...LYRIC LOUNGE...

JUNE, 2001
The rockers of Lifehouse give you the lowdown on their new hit song.
By Laura Morgan and Dina Sansing

With their thought-provoking single "Hanging By A Moment," Lifehouse proved that sensitive hard rock isn't an oxymoron. On their equally introspective second track, "Sick Cycle Carousel," the guys again delve into murky emotional territory. We asked some San Franciscans to guess why frontman Jason Wade sounds so bummed on the band's latest tempestuous track.

What you thought it meant...
"It seems that the song is about a couple's struggle to stay together. I think 'Sick Cycle Carousel' is about how relationships are reciprocal and how everything you do can affect them. It's a circle of trust. In this song, I think things work out in the end and everyone lives happily ever after."
-Nick Babylon, 17

"It's about a guy who's following his dreams but finding it really hard. The 'Sick Cycle Carousel' probably refers to a time when he was trying to reach his goals but kept falling. The carousel symbolizes the ups and downs. As in most alternative songs, there's no resolution."
-Angela Muir, 19

"I think the singer has been dating his girlfriend for years and doesn't know how to communicate with her anymore. He can't get out of the relationship but knows if he doesn't make a drastic change in his life and step off the carousel, the relationship won't grow."
-Adam Stephens, 21

"The song is about a man who is trying to search for a better life. He's sorting through lots of mental and emotional problems and wants to get off the crazy carousel that he's on. It seems like the world is spinning around him and that he can't really grasp anything he wants to."
-Julie Schutte, 19

The actual lyrics:
If shame had a face I think it would kind of look like mine
If it had a home would it be my eyes
Would you believe me if I said I am tired of this
Now here we go now one more time...
I guess I was wrong now one more time
This is a sick cycle carousel
This is a sick cycle, yeah

The real meaning:
Wade was frustrated when he penned this tune two years ago. He'd been having communication difficulties with his girlfriend and was trying to sort things out with her. "But the song is about overcoming obstacles in general - whether they're drug, family, or relationship related," he says. Did Wade get off the "Sick Cycle Carousel"? Yep - that girlfriend is now his wife.
