The Lyra Chronicles: Blood BrothersNov. 2000

Phil looked around the bar, wondering how the hell Steve had talked him into coming in here. It was a lot rougher than the places they usually hung out, but then again Steve and the girls didn’t really have anything to worry about. It wasn’t like they would be hurt if a fight broke out or anything. And the band had just finished touring on Euphoria, so Phil was just plain too tired to care.

The first couple of hours went well, everyone in the bar behaving themselves much better than Phil would have expected. Then he saw two rough looking bikers walk in. Within five minutes, they started yelling at three guys sitting at the bar. The first flash of steel had Phil ready to hide under the table to safeguard himself, but Steve jumped up and got in the middle of things hoping to spare a mortal life or two. A man came flying at the table where Phil was still sitting with Leesha and Lisel and the girls pushed him hard back down onto the floor. But as he stood up, another man came running at him with a knife. The first man dodged him and sent the second sailing across their table, straight at Phil. Leesha tried to get in front of Phil and took a long cut along her arm for it. As the man pulled away and went after someone else, Phil smiled at Leesha and said, “Thanks, luv. Knew I could count on you to keep me out of trouble!”

Leesha started to smile, then looked down at Phil’s chest. There was a hole there, pouring out his precious blood onto the floor. Phil saw the look on her face and looked down, not wanting to see what she was staring at. He finally followed her eyes and found the wound in his chest. The pain started to hit as Leesha screamed, “STEVE! GET OVER HERE!!”

Steve heard her urgent scream and turned towards the table just in time to take a cut to the face intended to slash another man’s throat. He reached up and grabbed the hand holding the knife without even looking at the man and broke his wrist before nearly flying to Phil’s side. Phil and Leesha were both holding their hands over his stab wound, but it was still bleeding heavily. Steve picked him up and motioned for the women to follow him out into the street. Leesha took the lead, pushing people out of the way with her full strength to clear a path for Steve and Phil. They made it to the street when Phil looked up at him and said, “I’m not going to make it to a hospital, mate. Might as well let me die here.”

Steve shook his head and said, “No way! We’ll get you there, Phil, just hang on!”

Lisel grabbed Steve by the shoulder and whispered, “Listen to his heart, Steve. He’s right. Even if you try to fly him to the hospital, he’s still losing too much blood to make it there.”

Looking down at Phil, Steve whispered, “I can bring you over, mate. Make you one of us. But you need to agree to it!”

Phil nodded and pointed feebly at the alley nearby. Steve made it there as fast as he could, then leaned his head gently to Phil’s throat. He whispered, “I can’t take much, but there’s still too much blood in you yet to cross over.” Once again, Phil nodded, understanding that Steve would do what was necessary. Steve’s fangs sank gently into Phil’s throat, completing the process that the knife wound had begun. When he heard that terrifying rhythm in his best friend’s heart, he stopped and slashed his own wrist. He put it to Phil’s mouth quickly and Phil drew heavily on the flow. When Steve pulled away, Phil gave him a smile and whispered, “Somehow I always knew you’d be the one, Steve.”

Steve held him close as Phil’s body finally gave up the fight for human life. Bloody tears trailed down Steve’s face as Phil took his last breath as a part of the living world, then Phil’s body went still. Lisel pulled Steve to his feet and said, “He’s going to wake up hungry, remember? We’ve got to be ready to feed him or he’ll be out of control!”

The three vampires left Phil’s body in the alley and headed back into the bar, where the fight still raged. Each of them grabbed one of the bleeding men and killed them quickly, stashing their bodies amid the fighting mob. They slipped out just before the police arrived and made their way back into the alley. Only a moment later, just as Steve reached him, Phil woke looking for blood. He grabbed his friend and slammed him against the brick wall, viciously sinking his teeth into Steve’s throat. Steve braced himself, letting Phil get the blood he needed to get past that first hunger. As Steve started to feel his head spin, he pushed Phil away, not letting him take all Steve had. Leesha stepped forward, letting Phil grab her before he could go after Lisel. Then was a glint of recognition in his eyes as he lowered his fangs to her soft white throat, pinning her to the wall just as a police officer walked into the alley. Steve grabbed Lisel, kissing her quickly to prevent the officer from taking too much interest in Phil and Leesha. The officer looked them over, shook his head and moved away looking for any of the other trouble makers.

Leesha writhed passionately under the pressure of Phil’s body, the pleasure in giving him her blood outweighing any pain she felt. He pulled away from her throat and looked down into her eyes, the rush of the blood as exciting to him as it was to her. Before Steve could stop them, Phil reached under Leesha’s mini skirt and tore her undergarments from her body. He entered her roughly as she moaned in ecstasy, urging him softly to take her quickly. Steve and Lisel watched as Phil thrust into her, not even noticing his surrounding. Her nails dug into Phil’s shoulders as he tore her blouse open, his hands going over her breasts as her leg wrapped around his hips. Leesha felt the first waves of her orgasm and tore away Phil’s shirt to expose his throat to her mouth. Her fangs sunk home just as Phil felt her body clamp down on his. He gave one last hard push into her body as his climax took him, then lowered his fangs gently into Leesha’s flesh, drawing slowly at her vein.

Watching them, Steve looked at Lisel and caught the look in her eye. Her own hunger was raging out of control, a need for the blood kiss only two vampires can share. He pulled her back into his body, his fangs descending as his lips reached her soft flesh. Rather than the heat of Phil and Leesha, this was a slow, loving thing between Steve and Lisel. She bit him gently, the pull of her body on his a demand needing to be met.

While the two couples were locked in their kiss, another cop walked slowly into the alley. He watched them all leerily, not sure how far these people had been involved in the mayhem inside. The vampires pulled apart within seconds of each other and turned to stare at the cop. As soon as the officer looked at the blood on Phil’s shirt, he started to move to Phil to find out if he’d been injured. Leesha stepped between them and stared into the cop’s eyes, stopping him in his tracks. Then the vampires took to the skies, living the mesmerized man standing there staring into the wall. They flew into the night, heading back to the safety of the coven house.
