This area is located east of the Lukachukai mountains, near the Arizona/New Mexico border. According to local residents Casey & Rosalinda Benally, Red Valley is a recent name for the region. The older Navajo name is Tsé Lichíí' Dah Azkaní, the name of the rock shown in the picture to the right. Though this name literally means Red Rock Mesa, it is known as "Saddle Rock" in English.

Two other rock formations are distinctive in the area. Tsézhin Íí'áhí (literally means Standing Lava Rock) or "Thumb Rock" as it is called in English. Tsézhin Íí'áhí is shown in the picture in the lower left-hand corner. "Thumb Rock" is also known as Tsé Digoní. The last distinctive formation in the area is known as Dleeshí (literally Clay), which is seen headed east on Navajo Route 14 on the south side of the road. This picture is not shown.
