As I mentioned before, the ability to name chords is important for several reasons. if you're jammin' with a fellow guitar player and you see him/her playing a chord progression, you have to be able to recognize what kind of chords they are in order to know what scales or lead licks to play over it with. Another good thing about knowing how to do this is if you have written a song or chord progression and want to either write it down or teach it to someone it is very useful to just be able to say "play an A# Minor Seventh followed by a C Major Ninth" rather than having to go through the grueling process of "alright, now put this finger here..." I have drawn, labeled, and named several chords below. Try to recognize the similarities between these chords, their names, and the interval chart on the other page. Using the charts on the "intervals" subsection try to name these simple chords. And these ones. And now try these more complex ones. |
