Father Troy Trail

History of the Trail

In 1762, Colonel William Amhert landed in Torbay Bight with ten ships and eight hundred men. He marched overland to St. John's where he defeated the French and successfully recaptued Signal Hill. This would be the last battle ever fought between the British and French in Newfoundland.

The coves and inlets along the trail have been a shelter for many ships, some of which have sunk off the coast.

*Note: Historical markers have been placed along the trailway containing more information.

First Parish Priest for Holy Trinity Parish. Father Edward Troy travelled the trail to inister his flock from Torbay to Flatrock. Father Troy was responsible for helping build a section of the trail from Torbay Beach to Bullocks Town, over Costley's Hill (across form present day Hickey's Hill).
