Duties of Fire Chief
- Shall recommend the most suitable form and method of organization for the municipal fire department and recommend rules and regulations for its control and management.
- Shall prepare and submit itemized estimates of the financial needs of the municipal fire department for materials, supplies, equipment and manpower.
- Shall direct the deployment of the municipal fire department personnel for maximum effectiveness, maintain a program or recruitment, selection and promotion of personnel, supervise the evaluation of personnel and provide for a comprehensive program of training.
(c.1) Shall ensure that, where the fire department has been authorized by the minister as being responsible for responding to and providing emergency services for other emergencies, its members, both paid and volunteer, are trained in standard first aid and basic life support, and within a period of 24 months after the date of the minister's authorization, the minimum standards for a first responder level certificate have been completed.
- Shall respond to and take command at fires or other emergencies personally or through subordinate officers and direct firefighting or other emergency activities.
- Shall establish a liaison with provincial firefighting and prevention authorties and keep abreast of latest developments and firefighting methods, equipment and administration and promote public awareness of fire prevention techniques.
- Shall prepare reports on firefighting equipment and apparatus and the condition of buildings and businesses within the municipality regarding fire protection.
- Shall ecommend to council fire protection plans for their consideration and implement those plans upon approval.
- Shall carry out other duties that may be assigned by the manager, or where there is no manager, by the council.
