The Torbay Volunteer Fire Department opened in 1974. From the 24 members it began with it has now grown to 31, still containing 6 of the original. With only having one truck on it's opening, it now has five. One was purchased in 1976, another in 1985, another in 1986, and finally another in 1997. A van was also purchased in 1991.
Made up solely of volunteeers, the fire department assists in many types of emergency situations aside from carrying out fire duties and are active in fundraising for different events, such as a softball tournament, card party, the Regatta, and the Jr. Firefighter Program ( 5 years in operation ).
