The Village of Torbay
There are memories of my childhood
In a village by the sea,
Where I grew up with my parents
And I learned it's history.
It has its coves, its little nooks,
Its beaches and the quay;
I'm proud to be a native son,
From the "Village of Torbay".
There's quite a lengthy history
Or its quaint old rocky coast;
The English beat the Frenchmen
As they fought from post to post;
The historic Beothuck Indian
Once lived on that old clay;
I'm proud to be a native son,
From the "Village of Torbay".
It's said John Cabot landed there
The founder of our land;
He stepped ashore, said, 'Terra Neuve'
With a flag held in his hand.
So peaceful was this beauty spot
in the calm the Matthew lay;
I'm proud to be a native son,
From the "Village of Torbay".
My birthplace has its valleys,
The hills point to the sky,
The green trees all reach out their arms
And bid you to come by;
The meadows and the landmarks
The signs all seem to say,
You're proud to be a native son,
From the "Village of Torbay".
You can stand upon the Battery
And take in many sights;
Moonlight on harbour waters
Shining out its golden light;
The sweet smell of the wild grown flower
The smell of new own hay,
I'm proud to be a native son,
From the "Village of Torbay".
We use old sayings handed down
From our father's days of yore;
Our hospitality known to all,
You'll find from shore to shore;
Our lassies full of beauty
Our lads I can't say nay;
They're proud to be all native sons,
From the "Village of Torbay".
The rocks, the hills, the pathways,
All make for lover's spots;
To hear the birds sing in the trees,
The women with the tots.
The flakes, the stages, motor boats,
Brooks winding on their way;
I'm pround to be a native son,
From the "Village of Torbay".
The ripple of the waters
Flap up against the shore,
But times those ripples turn to waves
And then you hear them roar;
Newfoundlanders won their fame
"Better than best" they say;
We're proud that some were native sons,
From the "Village of Torbay".
