EPE at America's Best Karate 3-25-06

Review by: EPEFAN2

Well, after 2 years of waiting, we heard that our favorite local band, The Electric Pepperoni Experience was gonna be on a 3 band show. Well, as we arrived we found that the other 2 bands had canceled and the EPE was the only act on the bill. The crowd was small, and the band was nervous. However, they did a very good job.

The opened with a flawless rendition of their signature song, "Animal". The band was on fire. James' vocals and drum fills were spot on, Stokes was full of life, and Carter's solo was perfect. This was truly the musical highlight of the night.

Up next was a cover of the Green Day song "Brain Stew". Everything started off fine with Carter nailing the vocals and James and Stokes rocking the cowbell. However, shortly after the beginning of the first verse, James had an issue with his Hi-Hat. That caused him to miss some fills and not have use of his Hat pedal for the remainder of the song. However, they recovered to nail the song anyway.

After this, it was time for another original. The band played their ballad "Fabulous" to perfection. It was so good, that the audience requested an encore later in the evening.

The night so far had been awesome. Sadly, the next 2 songs would bring it down a bit. The band launched into a cover of the Outfield song "Your Love". It was a MESS. The only part worth writing home about were the awesome vocal harmonies from James and Stokes. All in all, not too bad considering that they just learned that song that day.

The next tune was another original. "Black Rum" was a mixed bag really. Stokes and Carter were on fire. IMO, this was Carter's crowning moment of the night as his solo was on FIRE! However, James ruined this on in every way. For some reason he played the entire thing at warp speed and sang it like a bad Cookie Monster. He is capable of much better.

The band ended the night with a cover of the Lit song "My Own Worst Enemy". All in all, it was a good version though James blew a fill and dropped a stick. At the end, the band played an encore of "Fabulous" and went to the house. All in all, a decent debut. Hopefully these guys will improve in due time!
