Chapter 1: Lavos Revealed part 1, The Village of Dendoro
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Congratulations your majesty! It's a boy!"
These are the fateful words spoken on the day fate began it's
irreversible coarse toward the only true destiny. The birth of one Janus
Zeal was the first trigger in what would eventually lead to the demise
and destruction of an entire universe. But first let's take a step back.
Let us see how life was before Janus. Before Zeal. Before Lavos.
Before, when everything was as fate had planned...

The time is somewhere around 12,000 BC. The place, Terra continent.
For as long as their history had recorded, humans had lived in relative
peace, other that a few wars here and there. Sure, people had their
differences. What culture doesn't? But even so, there hadn't been a war
in over 400 years. There was a few major reasons. For one thing, it's
12,000 BC. They had hardly anything in the first place so there was
little to argue over. Also there were few, if any, weapons on the entire
continent. Remember, there had been no warfare in over 4 centuries...

There were no kingdoms. No body to govern the land. But that was
fine. No governments were needed. People lived in small villages and
rarely traveled to others. There was simply no reason to. Everyone lived
off the land, plus your whole family and all of it's generations would
have lived in your village with you so there was no reason to travel.
But of coarse. There are exceptions. There was one village, Dendoro,
full people who explored all the time, all their lives. The only time
these people spent at the village was to eat, sleep, or tell of their
travels. In fact, the only people who didn't explore the land were the
young, the old, and the ill. Yes, everything was peaceful. Until a
family of travelers stumbled upon a power so uncomprehendably and
omnipotently powerful that it could, and would, drive these peaceful
people to fight, enslave, and even kill...

"Hey Koro! Come over here! Look at this!"

"What? What is it Tarn?"
"...Tarn? Where'd you go?"

"I'm in the entrance to a cave! Up by this tree! Hurry up, you gotta see
this!"

"What already?"

"Look! Drawings! They look ooold."
Tarn pointed to an obviously ancient cave-drawing.

"Who cares Tarn?"

"We should! I've been through this cave entrance hundreds of times and
never, I mean never have I seen these before!"
Of coarse, Tarn was exxadurating. He always did. He makes himself out to
be one of the great travelers of Dendoro. But he's avarage. Don't get me
wrong, he is good but the reason he's so full of himself is that he
started exploring at an early age because his father wanted him to be
the best. Unfortunately, Tarn's father turned him into the most
headstrong person in the village.

"Oh please. Face it, you're not that great. Chances are, you'll never find
anything worthwhile. Besides some kid probably drew it."

"I seriously doubt it! Just look and you can see what I mean. First of
all these are about 6 feet up. No 'kid' is that tall. Second look at
that...thing. I've never seen anything like that ever before, and you
know I've been all over the place!"

"Fine then, let's take a look"

Tarn and a reluctant Koro looked at the drawing on the cave wall. It
appeared to be telling a story. First there are some people standing
around what appears to be a fire with some huts in the background.
There's a big ball of fire in the sky and two onlookers are pointing to
it. On with some sort of feathery head dress and another with a staff
and a beard. Then there is the same scene, only the people are
scattered all over, the fireball's gone, and the huts are on fire from
flames that shoot out of the side of the drawing. Next there's a
gigantic, spiked creature with flames all around it and some villagers
with spears seem to be attacking it. Then it shows the spiny creature
half buried under the ground. Then a huge hole. Finally, many people are
praying to the huge hole. And the two people from before are sacrificing
some animal with sharp teeth and a scaly body. Closer investigation
shows that there seems to be some symbols under the spiked creature.

"Okay Tarn. Maybe it is important. Let's have the elder look at it."

"Hey Koro. Maybe it has something to do with the recent cold weather. Ya
think?"

"Like I said, maybe. Let's just go get Genji. And relax."

"Okay. Let's go!"

The two travelers set off for Dendoro to tell their amazing tale and
hopefully have the elder make some sense of it all.

As they walked through the lush green forests of Terra Continent
Koro stopped dead in his tracks. Tarn turned toward him but before he
could speak he realized it too. A single snowflake had fallen from the
sky. Now, it's not like they've never seen snow before but it was the
middle of summer and it doesn't snow in summer.
The travelers turned toward each other then looked up to the sky.
Another flake fell. And another. And then more and more came down in a
light sprinkle of snow. "I've gotta break the silence Tarn. What in the
hell is going on?" Koro asked in a slightly worried tone.

"I don't know," Tarn replied, pausing for a second, "But it doesn't look
good. We'd better pick up the pace and get to the village, pronto."

"Right."

Meanwhile in Dendoro, a small boy came bursting into the cave in which
the elder resided...

"Genji, Genji!" The boy cried out

Genji was startled and almost spilled the soup he was eating then said,
"What is it my child?" in his soft, caring voice.

"Genji! It's snowing! Quick do something!" The boy yelled in an overly
excited tone, "Everyone's gettin' scared! Especially the farmers!"

The elder slowly got up out of his rickety, old rocking chair and
walked to the front of the cave. He opened his eyes wide and took a look
around. He pricked up his ears and listened for a moment. He gently
sniffed with his nose pointed upward, and sneezed from the cold, then
stepped out of the doorway and out into the chilled summer air.

"When, my boy, did this start?" Genji asked in almost disbelief even
though he had seen the snowfall himself.

"Just a few minutes ago! I was playin' tag. No wait catch. Yeah. No. It
was tag. No, it couldn't have been. But." The small boy rambled on,
trying to figure out what he was playing for a few more minutes before
Genji stopped him.

"My son, it seems you are quite confused. Try to relax and rest your
mind for a moment and it'll come to you. In the meantime I'll ask
someone else. Thank you for bringing this to my attention."

The boy walked off, still talking to himself about whether he was
playing tag or catch while the elder took a few more steps outside.

"Genji there you are!" Tarn exclaimed from a distance. "I guess you've
noticed. It's snowing in the summertime. What do you make of all of this?"

"Well well well. Koro and Tarn. Koro you know you won't be 16 for
another three months. What were you doing out of the village? And Tarn
Why did you take Koro along with you?" Genji asked in a slightly
perturbed tone of voice.

"I'm sorry Genji. Koro followed me. I know I should've tried harder to
stop him but Koro can be quite a pest you know?" Tarn said apologetically.

"Quite" Genji said with a chuckle.

"That's not funny at all! I'm old enough to go anywhere without anyone's
permission!" Koro said in his defense.

"Enough of this blabbering. Back to the snow, Genji" Tarn said, anxious
to hear what Genji had to say.

"Yes, well, to be frank. I have no idea. One minute I'm enjoying some
fine, Turtle Soup and the next Rune come's bursting in and I almost
spill that soup all over myself," Genji says, with a little too much
care about his soup, "I really don't know what to make of it. Perhaps
it's an omen of coming change, or perhaps it's a freak storm from the
icy regions far south of here. Then again someone could be doing this.
Maybe the god's have decided to change the seasons. While all of this
sounds unlikely it is just a guess and therefore should sound that way.
Maybe it's..."

"Elder Genji we found something that might have somethin' to do with the
snow!" Koro interrupted.

Genji stopped talking, first annoyed that someone would interupt an
elder, then he looked at the brown haired youth for a moment and
gestured for him to explain what he was talking about.

"Well you see we," Koro stopped for a minute as he felt Tarn's scornful
eyes on him, "Uhh, I mean, Tarn found some cave drawings."

"Is this so Tarn?" Genji asked, quite intrigued by the whole matter.

"Yeah. I was going into a cave that I'd been into lots of times before
and when I walked out I noticed some strange drawings on the wall. They
look like they were made with some red clay or something. It was like
nothing I've ever seen and you know..."

"Yes we know. You've been all over the place." Koro interrupted, mocking
Tarn.

Tarn just scowled at Koro again and smacked him in the head. "Now you
listen here Koro, I've had it up to here with you and..."

"Oh shut up Tarn! You act like you're the greatest explorer ever and..."

"Please, stop and just show me the drawings my children." Genji said,
breaking the fight.

"Fine" The two said in unfriendly unison.

"Now now, there's no need for attitude. You two are brothers. Now start
acting like brothers and stop fighting. Tarn you will take me to these
cave-drawings and Koro, you'll stay here at the village and calm everyone
down. Tell them I'm trying to make sense of it and to just relax." Genji
said and before Koro could protest, added, "And I don't want to hear any
complaining from you Koro. Just do as I ask."

Koro let his shoulders slump and said with a bit of disappointment,
"Okay...but one last thing. Who's Rune?"

"The little, dirty-blonde haired boy that lives next to you. One would
think you two would know each other seeing as you live next to each
other and all. Really Koro, you need to be more social"

Koro didn't reply. He stood there, head cocked, arms crossed for
a few minutes then said to himself in a confused manner, "No little
boy lives next to me..."

And so Tarn lead Genji to the site of the mysterious drawings as Koro
tried to make sense of what Genji had just told him. There was
definitely something going on and no one seemed to notice except for
Koro and Rune. But why them...why now...?
