Chocobos
Raising chocobos takes a great deal of time
and work, but in the end, it pays off. The first thing you need to do is
rent a couple of stables from the Chocobo Farm. This can't be done until you have aquired the
Highwind on disc 2. Once this is done, you can begin raising your chocobos.
The best yellow chocobos are up near the Icicle Inn, found with two
rabbit-like monsters.
If you want to get something better than a yellow chocobo,
you're going to need to mate two certain types of chocobos, a good and
a very good chocobo. The good chocobos are located in the Golden Saucer
area, usually found hanging around two creatures called flapbeats. The chocobo must be in front of the flapbeats.
The very good chocobos are found in the Rocket Town area, but I'm not sure which monsters they are with
though. You can either mate two of the good chocobos together at Class C,
or two very good chocobos together at Class C, or a good and a very good chocobo
together, both at Class C. If you haven't already guessed, the two chocobos you plan
to mate must be the opposite gender of the other. You will need to use a Carob
Nut to mate these chocobos with. The Carob Nuts are held by monsters
near the excavation site, which look somewhat like a chocobo. Stealing the Carob Nuts is probably the easiest way to aquire
one, rather than killing the monster and hoping you receive one after the battle. You might also want
to load the two chocobos up on the most expensive greens you can find. When you mate the two chocobos you
have selected, there is a very good chance that you will end up with a green or
turquoise chocobo. If you do not get either of these chocobos, keep mating
the two chocobos you chose to breed with and you will eventually get a green chocobo,
also called a mountain chocobo, or a turquoise chocobo, also called a
river chocobo. Once you have a colored chocobo, race with the two chocobos
that breed the colored one until they are at Class A. Once they are at Class A, mate
them once more with a Carob Nut, and you should end up with a green or turquoise
chocobo, depending on what color chocobo was breed before. Both of these
colored chocobos have special abilities. The green chocobo has the ability
to scale mountains, while the turquoise chocobo has the ability to cross shallow water.
Remember to get the special materia from the Materia Caves. One of the Materia Caves,
located in the Wutai area, contains a materia known as Mime. This can be reached by the
green chocobo. The other Materia Cave, located in the Mideel area, contains Quadra Magic.
This cave can be reached by the turquoise chocobo. Both materia are very useful.
Once you have a green and turquoise chocobo, you can try to breed a black chocobo.
To do this, you will need to race the two colored chocobos until they reach at
least Class A, and also feed the two chocobos a bunch of Sylkis greens.
Once they have reached Class A, mate the two chocobos together. It
doesn't really matter which nut you use, but I suggest an expensive one.
Once you mate the two chocobos, you will probably end up with a black chocobo, which is capable of crossing
shallow waters and mountains. If you do not get a black chocobo, simply mate
the green and turquoise again until you finally DO get one. Once you have
a black chocobo, you can go to another Materia Cave, where HP<->MP Switch is located.
My opinion is that this materia is basically useless.
Once you have a black chocobo, you can attempt to breed a gold
chocobo, capable of going anywhere on the map. This chocobo is somewhat
difficult to aquire. First of all, you will need to get an excellent chocobo,
which are located near the Icicle Inn. As you read earlier, these chocobos
are only found with two rabbit-like monsters. Once you have an excellent
chocobo, you will need to go to Goblin Island, located North-East of the
Chocobo Farm. Here you will need to steal a Zeio nut from a goblin. Once you
have the Zeio nut, you will have to race your black chocobo up to Class S. This
won't be very difficult if you feed it a bunch of Sylkis greens. You will
also need to race the excellent chocobo up to Class A. Once you have completed
all of these tasks, you will be ready to mate the two chocobos together, using
the Zeio nut, of course. If you are lucky, you
will aquire a gold chocobo. Once you have a gold chocobo, you can reach
the final Materia Cave which contains the greatest summon materia, known
as Knights of the Round. This Materia Cave is found on Round Island, located
on the north-east corner of the world map.
