The enemies of the castle are fairly difficult. Watch for enemies such as red gargoyles and the mancats. They can do FIR2 to cause major damage to the whole party. When you fight 5 or 6 of them this can be a real problem. Also watch for medusa that can turn your party members to stone. Hopefully, you brought a few SOFTs. |

Remember that stepping on the columns teleports you to another room on this floor. This can become difficult because often times there are many choices of columns to take. At the first 2 rooms there's only one choice so take them. At the 3rd room take the bottom column. The next room there is only one choice. And in the next room take the bottom column as shown in the picture. |
You'll have one more room with only one column choice and then you'll come to the final room. This room is a biggie because it has 4 column choices. Make sure you pick up the zeus gauntlets. They are unequipable until the class change, but they have another purpose. |
If the zeus gauntlets are being held by a character then it may be used as an item in battle. And when it is used it casts LIT2, no matter which character uses it and it costs nothing. It doesn't even have to be equiped to be used. This can come in very handy. |
Anyways, this is the correct column to take to get to the next floor. Don't worry, the next floor doesn't have teleporting columns like this one does. After taking this column, take the stairs in the room you're teleported to. |
There's some valuable treasure on the 3rd and final floor. It's also not nearly as annoying as the 2nd floor. The first chest contains a heal staff. It works in the same way that the zeus gauntlets worked. It casts HEL2 in battle. The next set of treasures contains some iron gauntlets, a gold bracelet (worth 50000G!), and an ice sword. The ice sword is the best sword in the game to this point, equip it right away. |
You'll then arrive at a treasure room containing chests with 7340G, 1455G, an empty chest, and a HOUSE. Then you'll get to the last treasure, the whole point of coming here. So what is the proof of courage... a rat's tail!? How does getting a rat's tail prove that you have courage? Who knows, we are not worthy enough to question the mighty Bahamut. |
In any case, to leave you have to step on the throne northeast of the chest. This transports you to the first floor again. But, before you go you'll have to fight 1-2 zombie dragons. Whether it's 1 or 2 is completely random. The fight won't be that hard. In fact, it's actually a great place to gain exp. You can simply walk down a space and then back up again to get in the fight again. After the fight, exit the castle. |
The way back to your airship is long and hard, especially after the long Castle of Ordeals. Definetely use a cabin or house after exiting to save your game and to restore some HP. This is another advantage of taking the ship instead of the airship. If you did take the airship, use everything you have left to survive. |
Now head back to Bahamut to show him your "proof of courage". Remember that Bahamut is on this island in the bottom cave. Take the 2 long hallways to go see him. |
Bahamut takes the tail of the rat and gives you a spectacular reward. He upgrades all of your characters. Now your characters can use new weapons and armor, and your mages can use more magic. Plus, some non mages (knights and ninjas) can also use some low level magic. Take a look at the menu screen. |
Your characters have changed. They're now much more mature and stronger looking. Their names have also changed. Now that you're characters have upgraded, it's time take care of a few things before pursuing the next crystal. Check out my Characters page for more info on your new characters. |
First head back to Melmond and pick up the level 5 black magic spell WARP. WARP allows you to teleport to the previous level of the dungeon that you're in. |
Next, head back to Crescent Lake to pick up the level 6 white magic spell EXIT. EXIT is even better than WARP because when you use it, you completely exit the town or the dungeon that you're in. Next, let's pick up some low level white magic for your knight, and some low level black magic for your ninja. |
First, head back to Coneria to get some level 1 magic, then to Pravoka for some level two, and then to Elfland for some level 3-4 magic. Note: Your fighter/ninja won't be able to use some of the level 1-3 spells and most all of the level 4 spells, so don't think that anything is wrong if you can't learn some of these spells. |
-Now that you've gotten the class upgrade it's time to tackle the gurgu volcano. |
