OVERVIEW: Recapture Phin by defeating Gotus, and allow Gordon, Hilda, and the citizens of Phin to return. Gain valuable information from Hilda and Gordon and then go on a quest to Phin's Catacombs.
I. Recapturing Phin
-Phin and Phin Castle are both north of Gatea and the rebel camp. Ignore the town for now and head straight to the castle. (You can go into the town and beat up on the captains that you couldn't beat before but it's futile since you don't get anything for doing it.)
| |
-Once in the castle you'll find Layla waiting for you. Re-equip her if you want before continuing. There are random battles in the castle and there is a lot of treasure. But, DO NOT get any of the treasure yet. After beating the boss the random battles are gone making collecting this treasure much easier. |
-All you have to do to reach the boss is simply head dead north. Head straight up all of stairs and don't worry about the treasure.
| |
-You'll eventually come to Gotus who doesn't seem too happy at you. Don't worry about him that much, he's not that hard.

Drink, Hast6 |
-This fight can be anywhere from very easy to pretty tough. If Gotus uses a Bacchus Wine that casts drink on him, he will do much more damage. If he gets Hast6 off then he will also do more hits, then he can do some real damage. Otherwise, he's pretty simple. Use physical attacks on him and you shouldn't have any problems. Chances are he won't get off the Bacchus Wine and Hast6 with enough time to do any damage anyways.
| |
-After beating Commander Gotus all of the Empire's troops pull out of Phin and Phin Castle. As do all of the monsters. Gordon, Hilda, and others now occupy the Castle and the citizens of Phin have moved back.
II. Keywords Galore
-Now talk to Princess Hilda, she has a lot to tell you about. She starts by talking about Minh who left for Mysidia and hasn't returned yet. She asks you to go look for him. Learn the keyword Mysidia.
| |
-Repeat Mysidia and she'll tell you a little about Mysidia. It's a magical place and their magic can be used against the Empire. You've already seen the vast amount of magic sold there.
-She'll also talk about Mysidia Tower and that you need two masks to enter it, learn the keyword mask. She tells you that one of the masks is hidden here in Phin but she's not sure where.
| |
-Say mask to her and she mentions that you need a chant to enter this door. The chant is Ekume, learn this as well. That's all she has to say, for more info on this door in Phin, talk to Gordon.
-Say Mysidia to Gordon and he also mentions ultima, and allows you to learn the keyword. That's the fourth one so far.
| |
-Gordon doesn't know where this door in Phin is either, but say ekume and he says that Paul might. So pay Paul a visit. But, before you do it's time to backtrack and collect the treasure that you skipped in the Castle.
Phin Castle
Treasure: Break, Death, Toad, 1000 Gil, 1000 Gil, 2000 Gil, Aura, Potion, Were Cane, Giant Gauntlets, Quartz Armor, Gold Armor, Gold Shield
III. Treasure Hunting
-I'll start from the bottom and starting floor of the castle to make things a little simpler. Take these stairs in the southwest corner of the floor to start.
| |
-You'll come to this point at the top of the stairs. Take the right path at this intersection, there is nothing of any interest yet to the north.
-You'll come to a room with three magic spells: break, death, and toad. All three are fairly useless, they rarely work. I recommend that you simply sell all three of them. Then, backtrack to the ground floor of the Castle.
| |
-After heading down those stairs you'll notice a treasure to the north, it contains 1000 Gil. Now head to the east skipping the center stairway.
-You'll have to manuever your way around a bit to the east and then to the north to get these two treasures. They also have money in them. One has 1000 Gil and the other 2000 Gil. Now head back up the center stairway to the next floor.
| |
-On the second floor there are four treasure chests. Two are obvious and two aren't. Start by picking up this Aura spell on the west side. Aura can be a fairly potent spell at mid to high levels. It adds elemental damage to physical attacks. Make sure you heal yourself though because it's guarded by a sorceror and 4 sargeants, an easy battle unless you're caught off guard.
-Now for the not so obvious one. There is a hole in the wall, look at the picture closely to see where I'm standing if you can't figure it out. It leads to a were cane, not worth the whole secret passage ordeal. But, you can at least sell it.
| |
-The treasure on the east end of this floor is only a potion and it's guarded by enemies so don't even bother getting it. Instead head through this portion of the wall to get to a set of giant gauntlets. That's all the treasure in the Castle, so head out of the Castle. It's time to pay a visit to Paul back in Phin Town.
IV. The Town of Phin
-All of the troops have now left Phin and the town's citizens have all returned. The shops are now all open with new equipment and there's plenty to do. Start by paying Paul a visit. His house is located here, in the southwest corner of the town.
| |
-Say ekume to Paul and he has a rather interesting response. He tells you that the white mask is hidden within Phin's secret door.
-He goes on to tell you to check the upper right corner. So, what does that mean? He's actually referring to the upper right corner of the top floor of Phin Castle. But, before heading there stop at Phin's new shops and see what they have to offer.
| |
-Weapons: If for some reason you missed the winged sword then you might want to buy one. Otherwise, nothing of any real importance.
-Armor: The armor's worth is dependant on whether or not you've already made a trip to Mysidia and bought some armor there. If you have then don't even bother with the armor shop. If you haven't then you probably want to wait until Mysidia anyways since you will be visiting there soon. If your team is fairly weak and you haven't been to Mysidia then you may want to pick up a couple quartz armors for Phin's Catacombs but that's about it.
-Magic: With the exception of dispel all of the magic for sale is junk. Mini, fog, and slow don't do a whole lot and don't work a whole lot either. Especially in boss fights. You might want to pick up dispel though because it raises your defense against enemies' special attacks. (See the
magic section for more info.)

V. On to Phin's Underground
-Now that you've completed shopping, stop at the inn to heal up and then head to Phin Castle. Head to the top floor and then head to the upper right corner and examine this point. You will be prompted with the say, learn, item box. Say ekume to the wall and you can pass through it.
-Head along the path and you'll eventually come to this point. The stairs leading down here lead to Phin's Catacombs. Instead, head through this wall to get some secret treasures.
| |
-Stick dead against the wall to avoid exiting the Castle and having the whole thing over again. This is the point that you can re-enter and head to the room to the west.
-In this room you can find some quartz armor, a gold shield, and some gold armor. If you haven't went to Mysidia then you can equip these, otherwise just sell them. Now head back to the point that you got sidetracked at and go down the stairs, it's time to go after the white mask.
