Teela's mother is the Sorceress of Grayskull (Teela'na), and her father was a soldier that was slain in battle (likely during the Horde Invasion that took place approximately 20 years before the emergence of He-Man). She was adopted as a baby by Man-At-Arms. Teela has no knowledge of her true parentage, although one day she will take over as Sorceress of Grayskull.

Teela is the Captain of the Royal Guard of Eternia and the personal trainer of the heir to the throne, Prince Adam. She trains him to defend himself, but he never seems to really care or listen. 

Teela herself is the daughter of the Sorceress of Grayskull and the adopted daughter of Man-At-Arms, otherwise known as Duncan. She has been trained as a warrior all her life and is known to be resourceful, quick to anger, but kind and gentle as well. She also is very smart as well as very agile. She will someday become the Sorceress's successor in Grayskull, but she does not know this, nor does she know that her mother is the Sorceress herself. Her father, her real father that is, is a warrior who gave his life so that Eternia could have peace, but it is uncertain as to what happened or when it happened. She is a brave and skilled warrior, but she also finds that there is a hole in her heart where her mother is concerned. 

She once tried to find out who her mother was and succeeded when she went to the Oracle of the Crystal Sea, but the Sorceress wiped her memory, explaining to He-Man that it was too dangerous for Teela to know just now. She did tell Teela when Teela defended Grayskull while the Sorceress was missing that she will tell her who her mother is someday soon, but for now, that it was important that Teela remembered that her mother did love her very much.
