Logfile from G'deon
Quiet Corners (#18973)
Thick woolen tapestries dull the noise from the rest of the caverns, turning
this well-lit little room into a welcome escape. The stairs up place it against
the bowl wall somewhere above the living caverns, carpeted against the winters
chill or left as cool stone floor in summer. Some high and narrow windows can
be opened to the world outside, or secured with their heavy metal-sided shutters
and blue-threaded curtains.
Glowlight gleams, brightening the well-cushioned stone couches and lighting
the weyr residents half-finished projects: knitting undone, sewing only started,
leathers being worked soft, and even a hide of sketches or half-finished Thread-chart
spread out across one of the tables.
Curled up amongst the baskets of wool are five firelizards.
Zorana is here.
Obvious exits:
Inner Stairs
G'deon stomps in from the side entrace, boots trailing bits of watery snow and ice no matter how carefully he tries not to. He takes a moment to remove the offensive boots, then finally takes a look around before moving a little farther into the cozy little cavern and picking out an inviting armchair.
Zorana is already seated and lounging, curled up in a chair with a good book. The pages are open but she is staring dreamily off into space thinking about her own fantasies obviously. For once she is warm and the quiet corners is a nice place to relax.. and quiet.. right?
Delightfully quiet, which is exactly what this rider was looking for. G'deon takes a long, relished moment to stretch his legs, feet, even toes before slouching down to sprawl in the chair. He steals a long glance at the day-dreaming candidate while scrubbing a hand through hopelessly tousled hair and gives the young woman a friendly smile. "Must be a good book," the man comments out of the blue. What was that about quiet?
Zorana shakes her head and then grins as her the cloud in her eye leaves her "It is a good book.. only I like to try and put myself into the story line. And when I do that.. then I forget to read on.." shrugs and blushes as she closes the book slowly and puts it aside.
G'deon gives a warm, genuine chuckle at that and leans to the side, leaning his head in one hand. "I was always more of a story teller than a story reader for that very reason," he confides, sky blue eyes twinkling, crinkling at the corners. "Give ten people the same starting point, and you'll get ten different stories. I always liked that." He begins to lazily tug at the clasps on his riding coat now that he's beginning to thaw from the 'Reaches weather. "So where was that story line taking you today?" the rider asks Zorana, nodding his chin towards the book in question.
Zorana giggles "No.. I'm too shy to tell the stories but I love to hear them.." trails off as she remembers where she was "Oh.. training to become a mighty sorceress and then fight off the evil.. sounds corny..but oh so much fun." is rather cheerful about it as usual. Rare that someone asks her about her little dream worlds. "So, are you good at telling stories then?"
"Shy?" G'deon echoes, head tilting just a bit more as he peers at Zorana. "Well, admitting you are is the first step towards overcoming it. Or something." He ponders this for a moment, but not too seriously by the look on his face. Ex-smiths and messengers are not known for their bouts of deep philosophy. "Not that being shy is bad. It's kinda cute." Sun-bleached brows bounce up as Gid straightens in an almost giddy fashion. "I read one like that once. Like... a group of women... sisters but not, you know?" Don't worry, his storytelling talents are better than that. "Mostly I just hang out with the weyr kids, but every now and then on a slow night...." Out comes that roguish smile.
Zorana brightens a bit "Oh, I'd like to hear a story!" beams angelically "Yeah, well I am better than I was. I think the guards helped me with that. Ya know, having to get out there and solve problems with strangers, not that I particularly enjoy first meetings with people but it's a must." she shrugs "And one on one is easier than groups... cute?" hmms "I guess it could be but I'm not going to say anything like that for myself..."
G'deon simply laughs softly as he leans back into the chair now, pulling one foot up lacing his fingers around the raised knee. "Yes, I would imagine that could be quite a hurdle for a guard. What made you choose that for an occupation, by the way? Just curious." The smile he gives Zorana then is open, but totally at ease. Not all questions need answers. "I'm Gid, by the way, or G'deon if you must. You know, just in case. You're Zorana, right?" Pegging names to faces is a skill he's tried to fine-tune over the Turns.
Zorana nods "Yup, that's me... made me choose to be a guard. I was fascinated by it to be honest and I wanted a job that would provide me with a real home. Before then I tried the seacraft but with all the travelling and no family, I wanted a place to settle and know a whole bunch of people." So much for short explainations but it's the best she can do for that one. "Gid.. I will call you that because I won't remember you're other name.. I'm forgetful that way. Oh and if you want to add my to shortened name list.. you can call me Zorna or Zor, or Zo, or Zana or whatever other combinations..." Grins and laughs "I gave up on trying to tell people what to call me anymore." Wow, she's really friendly today, but then again she's pretty friendly any day.. usually happy sort.
G'deon gives Zorana a good-natured smile and winks. "You could call me an ashbucket, and I'd probably still answer, so no worries there." He wrinkles up his nose just a bit as he tries on the woman's other nicknames in his head. "Zor is a bit too masculine for you I think," he comments, opinionated person that he is. "Zana is kind of nice, though," he adds slowly, leaning to rest his head in his hand again. "It's soft, but not... just that bit of oomph at the beginning that says, 'Hey, I'm Zorana." Oomph. Such technical terms, bronzer. He winks at the guard-turned-candidate and crosses his long legs at the ankles. "I completely understand about wanting a solid home, though. I love having my family and friends close to me. Like I'm really a part of their lives and not some afterthought... or something like that."
Zorana nods "Yeah, I really feel like the guards adopted me and currently I think Lorsalia has. She's trying to teach me to make afghans and I am failing horribly." shakes her head "But Maybe I'll get there eventually." Back to her name "Sinead named me Zana.. and I personally kinda of like it myself but somehow ZorZor and Zorro are also used.. so I'll just answer to anything that starts with a Z." G'deon must have a really nice effect on the quiet girl, look how much she's talking! Wow..
G'deon laughs once, eyes twinkling once more as he shakes his head. "Knitting takes a bit of patience and focused concentration, I think. It's not for everyone, don't worry. Or practice. Practice makes many things better." The rider pauses a moment before a most decidedly roughish grin all but splits his face. "Are you any good with leather?" he asks on a tangent. Knitting and leatherworking... they're related somewhere, surely. Then, snapping back to yet another strain of conversation, he blinks. "Zorro... very interesting. But what do you like to be called /best/?"
Zorana hmms "I haven't actually worked with much leather but I suppose I would have to master that at some point in my life.. oh and knitting.. it's supposedly easy.. that is is Lorsa will stop staring at T'am long enough to explain it." Wink and light laugh "Maybe one day it will just come to me." adjusts her position and dangles her feet off the chair like a good short person. "I am fond of Zorna or Zana."
"Lorsa and T'am... who would have thought?" G'deon says with no lack of amusement in his voice. "Can't say T'am is really my type, but to each their own," he adds with an obviously teasing wink in return. "Yes, there's always the chance that something will just 'click' with you. That's how it was with me and woodworking. One day, there I was in the pens, a conscripted messenger to help repair a damaged fence, and it just... felt right." Poor Gid is so hopelessly right-brained that his little story will probably make no sense, but alas, it's what he has to work with. "So, after I was left standing that first time, I decided to skip over to the Smith Hall on Ista and learn a bit more about fence mending. And other things, of course." All related in his rambling, mellow baritone with those twinkling eyes that show just how much he loves talking about it. Or just... talking in general. "So will I find you in here Turns from know, chatting with the Weyr's knitting circle, the old biddies discussing all the latest gossip?" All said with a rather fond tone.
Zorana tsks and smirks "Don't you keep up with the news of the place. He came up with the excuse to come to Lorsa's weyr to get me but really you could tell he wasn't. It was really quite funny.." Grins and giggles. My aren't we giggly today. Must be the weather or something huh? "Something clicking with me? I guess guarding has gone really well with me. Sinead was a little mad at me when I decided to stand because she was going to make me a full guard soon but no matter." Shrugs. Hey candidacy has been as much a joy as guarding has and it really has allowed her to meet all sorts of new people. Places and people to spend time with in the cold of her first winter now. Yeah! "So you were a smith?" she asks before answering the last question in the list "You'll find me here turns from now I'm sure, not sure what I'll be doing.. either guarding or riding.. hopefully riding." Grin and a wink at that "Well.. if my little dragonet friend is out there somewhere. But as for the knitting, who knows and gossip? I'll probably be listening to it rather than partaking in it." Haha, yeah.. she doesn't spread the gossip, she just listens to it so she knows what's going on should it come up again.
Faranth help us, Weyr Fever is kicking in already! Shy candidates giggling - next it will be Pyrene seducing blue riders! G'deon simply smiles, however, obviously enjoying the company of this suddenly grinning, giggling ex-guard recruit. "Well, you never know what the future will hold for you," he replies mildly. "I had been scheduled to take my oral exams to become a journeyman the day after I was searched from a sunny Istan beach. How could I say no to the chance to return to High Reaches, though, and the chance to give those hot sands another try?" That shaggy topped blonde head shakes slowly, eyes narrowing as he smiles all the more. "Candidacy is sort of a 'pause' in life. A crossroad, if you will. We'll find out which way your life turns in a few months... As you said, you'd prefer it to turn towards riding, but what then?" he prods gently, head tilting a little as he leans back once more.
Zorana mrffs. First person that has really made her seriously think on this although it's not really a problem, she's thought on this plenty. What a worrier you are Zor! "Well good thing you impressed.. I mean then you might have had to go back and try to remember everything that you had studied for the exam. Yeah in a few months. I'm really excited to know though. Well... if I don't impress I'll get on in my life and become a full guard, if I do then I suppose I have weyrling stuff ahead of me but really I'd just like to get through the hatching part first before I start planning my life ahead of that." Nodnods and swings legs up over the arm of the chair, settling into a corner. When your legs dangle all the time, it can get a little annoying. They should make chairs for slightly shorter people like her. Well they probably do for midgets, but she's not quite /short/ see.
G'deon nods slowly, his smile remaining while his gaze grows a little more intent. "But you would be happy?" he asks. It seems like a rhetorical question almost, but Gid does like to get people to think. He leans forward, casually resting his elbows on his knees, folding his hands. Totally relaxed, aside from that gaze.
Zorana raises an eyebrow at him "Happy... riding? Or Guarding?" she questions not sure which he would like her to answer for. It does make a slight difference you see, obviously. Clasps her hands in her lap peering at him from her corner of a chair.
G'deon's smile widens quickly, blue eyes twinkling. "Either, really. I mean, can you see yourself happy in either position five Turns from now?" The rider gives a soft laugh then and waves it off as he sits back once more and crosses an ankle over a knee. "I just like to make sure people know what they're jumping into. Which goes for anything, really, not just riding. I know a very good healer who to this day has a certain regret because she didn't think things through all the way. She's happy as a healer, but..." He winks then and gestures with one pointed finger. "There's always that 'but'... 'What if'. I have a feeling you'll do just fine no matter what those gooey little dragons decide, though."
Zorana mms and nods "Yes I'll be happy with either. Both require work and brains and whatnot.. I'll be fine and happy with either to be honest I suppose and 5 turns down the line, one or the other I won't regret it because whatever happens, will happen for a reason I'm sure. If I end up being a guard then that will be the case I guess.." shrugs "I'll just be happy I get to stay here with my friends."
G'deon takes a moment to straighten his riding jacket before getting to his feet with soft reluctance. "I think you're absolutely right, Zorana." He gives her an easy salute with that trademark roguish grin of his before raking a hand through his hair once more, just as uselessly as ever. "It's been a pleasure, Zorro of the Candidate Barracks," the bronze rider says quite formally, offering a matching bow... well, as formal as you can get in wool-stockinged feet. "I'm sure I'll see you around." Then he ducks around the armchair to stomp his feet into his boots before heading out just as abruptly as he entered. It's his style.
