Sqaure is the undisputed champs of role-playing games. With a list of grade A games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Secret Of Mana. The company can really back itself up, but has this goliath of a video game developer taken a plunge down in the water? I myself have not been too fond of the PS era of Square, of course there is always FF VII which will stand many epochs as one of the greatest games ever made. For all of Sqaure's masterful work there lies a game in the corner that transcends even the mighty FF series, this games is Chrono Trigger, my personal favorite game ever. With multiple endings, a top-notch time traveling story that can be the envy of any seasoned sci-fi author, and remarkable graphics and sound. I have never played a game so complete. After years of rumors and waiting, Sqaure gave the world its most anticipated sequel in years. August 2000 was the american release date and I finally got hold of the much hyped second coming. I have always been one to like PC rpgs better like: Baldur's Gate, Asheron's Call, Diablo, and Everquest. Then Chrono Cross comes around and brings with it replay value and revives my faith in the modern console rpg.To say you have mastered this game means having to play through at least three times because of the numerous secrets. Presentation-wise Chrono Cross does not look as beautiful as a Final Fantasy, but it does not cheat by throwing in a forty million dollar cinematic every two hours. The graphics are bright and colorful with smooth-textured characters and colorful backgrounds that are soaked with vivid colors. The music is another high point. Yasunori Mitsuda(Xenogears,Chrono Trigger) who was a freelance composer for a while there, returns to the video game scene. This is one of the finest video game compositions I have heard. In my humble opinion he actually is better than Nobuo Uematsu, who is undeniably a legend, Mr. Mitusda just pulls the strings with great emotion. The intro "Scars Of Time" is my personal favorite video game song. The battle system is flexable, utilizing a polished Xenogears system, and the field effect meter is another ingenious idea. Despite how much I love Chrono Cross, it is not without its fault. There are just TOO MANY characters, like Suikoden, 3/4 of them have little effect on the overall story. It is also a pain-in-the ass to switch between all of them and equip each with their own elements. Chrono Cross still manages to suck me in its amazing world, and its such a shame people still have not seen what this series is capable of. While FF IX breaks sales records, I'll be playing Chrono Cross; I do not have anything by the way against FF. I just feel that Sqaure needs to concentrate a little more on their other series too.Rating=10
Pros= Great graphics, excellent musical score, innovative battle system, great character design, and tie-ins to Chrono Trigger. Cons=TOO MANY characters, and the story is little weak later on in the game. |
