I am happy to say that the Playstation 2 kicks ass, and alot of it too. Of the very first crop of PS2 titles to be shown as tech demos, among them was Gran Turismo 3. To tell you the truth it did not look too impressive at the time, the cars were just too shiny and Ridge Racer was always overshadowing it. Pssshh! Look now how the times have changed, Ridge Racer V was nothing more than a mediocre racing game and here is the beast of all racers. I personally am a big fan of the first two games, the realism in the graphics, controls and physics were enough for me to fall in love. Really this game is not at all one bit revolutionary, instead it is a evolution of what has been done before. Here is why I call this game the best PS2 game so far. Sure it may be called following the hype, since every gaming publishing is simply rooting for this game, but hell I must go with my gut instinct and yes I say this game rocks. Graphically not only is this the best looking PS2 game ever but is also one of the finest looking games ever. The tracks are laid out beautifully, from lushious looking forest to good old Rome. Yep some tracks are from previous GTs, except now they have the PS2 makeover. My personal favorite tracks are the night-time, rainy courses. The water on the street along with the reflections to the mist of the rain in the air must be seen to be believed. Its so photo realistic that its damn scary. The cars are nothing short of amazing either, they simply look awesome with all the details in place like decals to spoilers, man its all good. A Gran Turismo can only go as far as its gameplay takes it, and that will always be the backbone of the series. For starters there is not as many cars to select from. The selection early on is somewhat limited, remember how GT2 had so many cars that in fact if your car was not there then it must have sucked, not here. Its only the best of the best, a few cars that normal people may drive like the Acura RSX, Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro Z28, are a few, while the rest are exotic vehicles that most of us will never drive in our lifes. Teh controls like always are accurate and respond to your car's settings. If you have a high amount of horsepower but little grip on your tires as well as low suspension on your brakes, than guess what? You will slide all over, this is where most racing fans can be distinguished from racing buffs to just race for fun kinda gamers. If you expect to beat this game in a few months, than think again, there are lots of tracks to takle and 100+ hours of gameplay. I do have one minor complaint, the A.I. is somewhat innconsistent. At times I had to work like a dog just to place in the top 3, but later on in the game, my Mitsubishi Evo Lancer VII was capable of beating the big monsters, and thats because I had little upgrades really, with only a few turbo boost and a CPU Rom chip. I didn't win the races with flying colors, but I should have been easy prey to those cars. My assumption is that the computer has difficulty moving the larger cars. Its not much to complain about, just a minor mark, thats all. Other than that this game rules. Its the BEST game of the year so far and the first game to recieve a 10 since last year's spectacular Chrono Cross. Polyphony Digital has outdone themselves once more, and the result is many weekends I do not get anything done, bloody bastards.Rating=10 Pros=Man, you name it, this title games it. Take your pick: rich graphics, lots of detail, fine controls and physics, top notch level design. |
