Final Fantasy IX |
Are FFs being released to quickly? Final Fantasy is the most popular, influential, and best selling rpg series ever. But how in the world does Sqaure manage to release a Final Fantasy just about every year, especially considering that the company had so many excellent games in 2000 like Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3 to release right alongside FF IX. Somoehow FF IX turns out to be a prodigy child amongst even all these games. Yoshitaka Amano who had a two episode break returns and the characters and settings have that special Amano look, just simply stunning. He also has a comic out called Sandman, which shows his amazing artwork, but damn, they should've had better writers. Its just too convoluted and displays imagery over substance. Well back to how Sqaure gets so many games outta oven. They have numerous teams all over, so creating several games per year is no prob. Still can the quality continue? Lets hope FF X has some innovation and doesn't suffer the PS 2 shallowness curse that so many games on the system have caught.

It was not to long ago that Sqaure released Final Fantasy VIII. I found and many other RPGers out there can agree; FF VIII was a dissapoinment, featuring a sci-fi theme that just was not FF calibur. When I think of Final Fantasy, I think of great stories that occur in delightful fantasy lands, beautiful music, endearing characters, and fun combat. Say hello to Sqaure's best FF since the classic FF VII. The debate here at the Klan was whether to lable this as the single best Final Fantasy, the end result was no, FF VI and FF VII deserve to hold that title. I will say that I had a pleasent time playing thru this game. I am not going to give anything about the story or characters because most of you should know by now. As much though as I liked the story, the characters failed to really grab hold of me. Zidane is a ok hero and all, but to me he was more of a scrawny version of Cloud, without the jerk attitude of course. I really did grow attached to Vivi and Steiner, but the majority of the cast(YAWN)...just did not add a bang to the story. I really found myself blown away by the rich graphics. Stunning backgrounds and superb charcters(hint: play with texture smoothing on PS2). The music, a foundation of quality for any worthwhile FF, was a mixed baggy actually. I really was amazed by the FMV music clips, I am a fan of symphony; the actual game music was actually kind of weak and may I add there was a very annoying battle song. Overall FF IX lacks originality, but surely makes up that fault by being one of the most polished games around. Let me put it like this, if FF VIII you found not to be your cup of tea, FF IX certainly can renew your faith in this legendary series and become your cup of java. I would rank this as the fourth best PS one rpg ever. My list: 1). FF VII, 2). Chrono Cross, 3). Suikoden and then FF IX. Now what are you doing go play the damn game you bloody bastard. Rating=9.0 Pros=amazing story, beautiful graphics, simple yet effective combat, and good 'ol FF atmosphere. Cons=No originality, weak charcaters compared to FF VI and FF VII,too many RANDOM BATTLES. |
