The most popular and undeniably greatest japanese animated cartoon ever is Akira. It set a new standard on animation with its twisted and demented story along with serious theme. Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best animated cartoon series ever in my humble-ain't-changing-it-for-anyone opinion. The most obvious stand out aspect of this show is two things and the most important too; characters and story. 
Imagine the future of our world, aliens known as angels are attacking earth and you are one young teenage boy that must change your whole life just to pilot a mech. Shinji Ikari is the main character of the show, but he is not the only one who must pilot the mechs known as Evas. Enter two other pilots, Rei a egnimatic girl who was in a major accident while piloting an Eva. The other is Asuka, who is the most colorful of the three, this fiesty red-head who has one hell of a temper. These kids go through so much, that their problems are more than perhaps many of us would ever go through. This in effect is the major backbone of the story and helps add the intrigue of these characters making them so endearing. My favorite is Misato and her...ahem, fan service. For so long Evangelion has been labled as the most controversial cartoon ever and for many reasons it is. The whole concept is angels attacking us which must be God sending them in, and then Shinji and the pilots are only children, add lots of violence and you got one controversial anime.
My gripe, not with the cartoon but at ADV films and their lack of energy and enthusiasm to put a good number of extra goodies. Another problemo is sometimes some disc like number three only contain two episodes with one recap episode. Still this anime strives big and soars high too, its got a hectic story, believable characters, and beautiful Evas. I have so much and I mean so much more to say but you know what I won't waste anyones' time, so forget all the details. You must by all means see the best anime ever, sorry Akira, now get the hell out of here and go watch this!Rating=10Pros=Controversial religious story, good looking girls with great personality, plenty of fan service, lots of cool sci fi action.
