Its great to see Square actually give a shout out to their legendary classics that helped bring them to the level where they are at. If you are expecting remakes similar to the grand style that Working Designs did on their Lunar games, think again. Square did include some really good looking cut-scenes in both titles similar to FF VII. First let me talk a little about Final Fantasy IV.

Final Fantasy IV known to any well-informed Final Fantasy fan was known as Final Fantasy II when it made its debut on the Super NES. The story focuses on Cecil, a dark knight of the Red Wings, a military unit of the kingdom of Baron. The characters are still likeable, even up to today's standards.Cecil and Kain, best friends forever?? From the mishevious Porom and Polom, the twin wizards, to the senile Tellah and even the joyous and comedic Cid. The translation did get an overhaul. Some moments in the game actually are enchanced dramatically because of the newly written dialouge. There is one major problem here, and that is there is some slowdown that occurs during hectic battle situations. The music remains Nobuo Uematsu quality, but the sound effects are muffled strangely. Still this rpg will give any modern rpg are run for its money and FF IV is considered by most FF purist as the best Final Fantasy of them all.

Even though it is not a Final Fantasy game, many rpgs fans of yore call Chrono Trigger a rpg that is on par with the FFs, if not better. What is new here is the extra mode which gives hardcore fans a stronger reason to keep playing. Chrono Trigger still stands the test of timeEvery time the game is beaten, a new movie, song in the soundtrack area or some other feature is added. The anime cut-scenes by Dragon Ball Z famed artist Akira Toriyma, look simlpy hot and during key moments in the game, add excitement. The game itself remains unchanged, including the in-game text. The story is focused on time traveling and the main character of the show is Crono.Crono and Frog looking so cool The graphics still stack up today, surpassing even some rpgs(Ahem....Beyond the Beyond). The music has that warm presence that only legendary music composer Yasunori Mitsuda can provide. The battles are not random just like the game's phenomenal sequal Chrono Cross. The process of emulating the game on Playstation was not as rough as Final Fantasy IV, possibly since Chrono Trigger is a beast from 1995. Though one problem that is simply nasty lies in wait, long loading times. It's nothing too extreme like Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, but just like a stain on your clothes or a bad haircut; its there. The cast of characters are really colorful and are still one of the biggest parts as to why I love this game so much.

Final Fantasy Chronicles is one great compliation of the two best role playing games ever. They may have their little belmishes but are still so good that it would be a shame if any rpg fan that calls themselves hardcore passes it up. 2D can still live today people and these games prove it. One line for you guys: BUY IT! Rating=9.0
Pros=You get two classic games in one package, there are some cool cut-scenes added to both, and Final Fantasy IV has increased difficulty.
Cons=Slowdown in FF IV and loading problems in Chrono Trigger, and both games may be too archaic for some.

Final Fantasy IX

It was not to long ago that Sqaure released Final Fantasy VIII. I found and many other RPGers out there can agree; FF VIII was a dissapoinment, featuring a sci-fi theme that just was not FF calibur. When I think of Final Fantasy, I think of great stories that occur in delightful fantasy lands, beautiful music, endearing characters, and fun combat. Say hello to Sqaure's best FF since the classic FF VII. The debate here at the Klan was whether to lable this as the single best Final Fantasy, the end result was no, FF VI and FF VII deserve to hold that title. I will say that I had a pleasent time playing thru this game. I am not going to give anything about the story or characters because most of you should know by now. As much though as I liked the story, the characters failed to really grab hold of me. Zidane is a ok hero and all, but to me he was more of a scrawny version of Cloud, without the jerk attitude of course. I really did grow attached to Vivi and Steiner, but the majority of the cast(YAWN)...just did not add a bang to the story. I really found myself blown away by the rich graphics. Stunning backgrounds and superb charcters(hint: play with texture smoothing on PS2). The music, a foundation of quality for any worthwhile FF, was a mixed baggy actually. I really was amazed by the FMV music clips, I am a fan of symphony; the actual game music was actually kind of weak and may I add there was a very annoying battle song. Overall FF IX lacks originality, but surely makes up that fault by being one of the most polished games around. Let me put it like this, if FF VIII you found not to be your cup of tea, FF IX certainly can renew your faith in this legendary series and become your cup of java. I would rank this as the fourth best PS one rpg ever. My list: 1). FF VII, 2). Chrono Cross, 3). Suikoden and then FF IX. Now what are you doing go play the damn game you bloody bastard. Rating=9.0
Pros=amazing story, beautiful graphics, simple yet effective combat, and good 'ol FF atmosphere.
Cons=No originality, weak charcaters compared to FF VI and FF VII,too many RANDOM BATTLES.
