After more than four packages of Energizer batteries, I now can make my final judgement on Activison's port of their smash hit game. First let me point out that while most Tony Hawk fans might be expecting the same results as the Game Boy Color version, this game and the system are far from being in that level. At first I couldn't believe it, a handheld title looking this phat, and now I know why the GBA has a 32 bit chip within its internal organs. I squinted my eyes and even showed the game to my girlfriend and we could not believe what we had witnessed, players that are made of polygons and animate the way they do. Hell, you could say that the animation is even better than its big brother on PS One. Of course there is a catch like everything in life, the backgrounds or skateparks I should say, are not displayed in 3D. Instead Neversoft decided to use all the poly count on the players. The view is a 3/4 isometric view. There are two problems that arise early on in this review I will quickly splurge out. The GBA has the old format in its control layout, just like the Game Boy Color and the L and R buttons have a stiff feeling to them. Tony Hawk is all about quick button pressing and utilizing every button on the controller to mix moves. The Game Boy Advance has only four total buttons and so some of the tricks had to be removed in the process, that and for animation limit purposes. Then comes problems number two, the camera angle. Like I said Tony Hawk depends its creative gameplay by the player with speed and the camera does not follow the action in real 3D, instead it moves at a slower framerate since the angle is rendered. Now with that out of the way, its good not to neglect the greats of this hot title. Simply put that the brilliance of the gameplay did not diminish even if the speed did. There are still many tricks availible and you can even purchase new moves just like in the console editions. The career mode is still where its at as you must take on the different task like collecting the letters to spell SKATE, and other objectives such as getting the pro scores and sick scores. No secret skaters here like Spiderman, no create-your-own-park, none of that. The ability to play with friends is possible via the link cable, but even it is kinda lame. Really A lot was lost in the process of porting, but Activision kept the heart and soul of Tony Hawk: the gameplay, and at that it succeeds. I really can't just highlight the downs because taking Pro Skater on the road, playing it at work, whatever else you can do, it just cannot be beaten. Rating=7.5 Cons=Hard view to see and play in, not much other than the career mode. |
