I watched the latter half of Serial Expirements Lain in one sitting, and why is that? The show became apart of me and watching it all was mandatory, really I reccommend the experience. To sum it up, its like the good parts of Neon Genesis Evangelion, without all the death and horrible maims mixed in. I had to get a good drift of fresh air afterwards. This show has some really wacked out ideas! The next human evolutionary leap, mixed up with the advance of computer networks, Schumann radiation, the orgins of consciousness in the breakdown of the bicameral mind, and of all things, the Tophet Document, all revolving around one young girl, plagued with very immediate need to know"who is there, beyond me, here?" I beg your pardon for my excessive imprecision. Lain does that to you, partly because it would be criminal to reveal too many of her secrets, but also because much is left unsaid and unrevealed as the show draws to a conclusion. The animation style really does not look like anything else out there. This is also due to the fact that the show is done in no actual hand print cel animation, but in fact all generated through a computer. I like the different take this show also takes as well, instead of a traditional futuristic or medevil Tokyo, the show is based in modern times. Everything from Yoshitaka Abes character's clothing to DJ clubs gives it a hip feeling. And since the whole theme is based around the wire and its' numerous protocols. This is the perfect time to have this theme, since the internet and computers are growing in popularity. With its' sharp and original look, introspective characters. Lain is a welcome change from the junk that still piles up in the American anime market. Rating=9.5
Pros= Original look and story, top-notch animation. Cons=You might have to be a rocket scientist to understand some of the terminalogy. |
