TMNT 2 Review

TMNT 2 Review by: Luis Zena

To start off, this game is one of the very unique titles that will make people come back for more. Not only that, but the arcade version will live in our hearts for as long as we live since it was a great way to play with our friends at the local arcade after class. Those days are gone but the memories will remain. This review will hopefully help people realize not to overlook this title. I will divide the review in many sections so I can talk a little bit about each aspect of the game.

Sound

The NES does a great job in “imitating” the TMNT music in many ways. There is nothing like hearing 8bit ninja turtle music while fighting a bunch of foot soldiers. To this day, the music is still as enjoyable and entertaining. The sound of this game is the thing I most remember while playing the pirated version back when I was young, it’s mainly one of the things that keeps me coming back for more.

Difficulty

At first, you might not like the difficulty of this game, but if you keep going on and find strategies to defeat the bosses then you are going to have a blast every time you play this game. Of course, it’s better to play it with another player by your side because they come very helpful when the boss battle comes along. The difficulty is moderate because it’s not too hard but also not too easy which is something expected from Ultra Games a.k.a. Konami.

Fun Factor

Do I really have to say anything more than TMNT? This game will bring back memories from the Saturday mornings we spent watching the new TMNT shows and then after blowing our TMNT cartridge and hope it would work so that we could kick butt like the turtles did on the episode we just seen. Yeah, it’s all about kicking butt and Konami did an excellent job at recreating the show on the NES. If you like Double Dragon, then TMNT II is a must in your gaming list.

Graphics

In most games it’s not about how the game looks but how the game plays, and I try to overlook this, but I will eventually get yelled for not including this so here it goes. The graphics are superb for the days of the NES. Pretty much all you saw during that time was 8bit buildings and 8bit towers, so there was no comparison but to be honest, the levels were very well done mimicking the arcade version in many ways and sometimes even passing over the arcade version by adding more levels to the game. All the levels had great detail and interesting concepts. For instance, the dojo level makes the foot soldiers come out of the floor or even the wall making the environment more involved than in other games.

Controls

The controls respond how they are suppose to and doing the super hit is as easy as 1 2 3. You can literally go through the whole game by beating everyone using the A+B combo which at the end will save you a lot of lives. You can move up or down taking away the side scrolling aspect of the first TMNT game and giving you room for your strategic attacks. Well done by Konami.

Overall

This game has everything for multiple people fun but in the end there aren’t many extras to it except the famous Konami code which will help you start with extra lives. You can go through the whole game in about 45-60 minutes and that’s about it. Once you are done, there is nothing more to do but to turn the NES off and wait until you feel like playing again. Don’t get me wrong, this game is an excellent classic that I still play up to this day but back in the NES era there weren’t all the extras that games bring nowadays. This game is mostly for retro gamers in particular but also for open minded next generation gamers looking for gems of the golden era of Nintendo.

Ending

As an added bonus, I have made a little compilation of the TMNT 2 ending so enjoy!
